What you'll do

Meet: you're the staff of this new venture. We'll start with a brief at my office in the 20th arrondissement, housed in the Maroquinerie, a former leather factory and one of Paris' premier music venues.

Walk: I'll introduce some fundamentals of my method and then you'll gather inspiration. Our path is designed to maximize sincere reflections on the city, society, and the individual. We'll explore a broad variety of historical, adventurous, and offbeat settings.

Create: we'll debrief halfway at a cafe and begin to note what your eyes, ears, bodies, and minds observe. At our final destination we'll discuss the inspiration you've gathered and collect your contributions for a layout done by a top Parisian graphic designer to make available online.

A writer/urban explorer born and raised in California, I studied and lived in Boston, New Orleans, and NYC before traveling around the world for a year and moving to San Francisco to live more creatively. Eight years ago I came to Paris for love and since have completed an MFA in Fiction, produced my first book, started a nonprofit organization, became a dad, and walked thousands around Paris.

About the organization: The Yefe Nof Residency

The Yefe Nof Residency's mission is to cultivate a society where profit and purpose equally drive ambition. Working creatives are granted 2–4 weeks to finalize projects presenting ideas which somehow address civilization’s most pressing challenges. Your contribution is intended to generate energizing content, highlight the creative process, and support the development of a 6-week design residency.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to The Yefe Nof Residency.

Where you'll be

I'll connect you to the streets in these parts of district 20, 19 & 10: Menilmontant for the local youth and working class heroes; Père Lachaise cemetery for Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein, and the last of the Communards; Gambetta where there are still country houses, music halls, and artisans; Belleville to witness the view of the city and the edge; and, hidden spots on the Canal St. Martin hip parade.

I chose to spend part of my birthday on this adventure and that’s what it was in so many ways! Thank you Gil and if you’re looking to do something off-the-beaten-part and think new thoughts or cement insight you’ve already had, say yes to this purposeful and creative experience!

This is really a unique experience. Gil has been living in Paris for 9 years, so has a deep knowledge of the city and its history, yet still maintains that “not born here” air of observation and insight. In the “research” of getting the bones of our culture magazine together, we walked the city and had many an interesting conversation around what it means to be underground v mainstream, identity, and power dynamics. Not expected, but made our trip.

Really enjoyed my time with Gil. Saw parts of the city I would have never experienced. The free-form/journaling component of the experience was new and different for me--I was able to learn and reflect, while at the same time relax and enjoy Paris!
