What you'll do
N HIS CHARMING 1920s home in the heart of Venice, California, BRAD KAY brings his considerable talent, knowledge, wit and skill to the task of presenting brilliant evenings of live and recorded (mostly pre-1950) music. You’ll be so caught up laughing and being amazed, you won’t realize you also are LEARNING so much. He’s successfully been giving these house concerts for years. Now, he’s expanding to embrace Airbnb. Brad’s presentation is both spontaneous and well-scripted, and centers around his playing on the many fantastical and historic musical instruments on hand. Starting with the 1898 Bechstein Grand Piano, he may roam to the 1910 Langham-Hupfeld upright player piano, or the 1907 Mercedes wind-up Morning-Glory horn phonograph, or his 1903 Edison cylinder machine (which plays AND records). He sometimes will invoke the slide whistle and kazoo, in his never-ending advocacy of “Scorned Instruments.” He also does killer impressions of JIMMY DURANTE and NOËL COWARD! But mostly you’ll hear him play and sing beautiful jazz rarities on the Bechstein.
Mr. Kay has been playing piano and trumpet, singing and lecturing for over four decades. Working mostly in Los Angeles, but also in England, Canada, New York and points in between, he’s played with JANET KLEIN AND HER PARLOR BOYS, JOHNNY CRAWFORD’S 1928 JAZZ ORCHESTRA, THE MYSTIC KNIGHTS OF THE OINGO BOINGO (with Danny Elfman). He’s led his own MAJESTIC DANCE ORCHESTRA, composing and arranging. On piano, he has backed up MEL TORME, GROUCHO MARX and HARLAN ELLISON. He also has a world-class collection of some eighteen thousand 78-rpm records (the kind that break when you drop them!), and forcefully brings back the vivid sounds of LOUIS ARMSTRONG, BIX BEIDERBECKE, SOPHIE TUCKER, BESSIE SMITH, ENRICO CARUSO, CHARLEY PATTON, JIMMIE RODGERS and oh, so many more. WHITNEY RALEIGH, your host, is a professional cellist, active over 35 years.
