A musical walk along the Marina Beach

Chennai, India

Experience hosted by Amritha

2 hours
Includes drinks, tickets
Up to 7 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

Timing flexible (contact us).

The promenade along Marina Beach is dotted with more than 10 statues on the beach side and faces heritage buildings and institutions of prominence on the other side of the Kamaraj Salai (road). The statues include those of historical importance and icons of Tamil literature.

Starting from the Triumph of Labour statue (https://w3w.co/lyricism.prestige.rams), we will walk the (less than) 3 km stretch towards the Lighthouse at a gentle pace, taking in the sights and sounds. If you'd rather cycle than walk the way, we can arrange it by using bicycles that are available for hire.

While both of us will be explaining the claim to fame of the various people now carved in stone, I will be bringing some of them to life through musical renditions of some of their more popular works.

We will end our walk at the Lighthouse, climbing which offers stunning, rich views of the vibrant shoreline. (Visits to the Lighthouse are subject to its opening hours.)

Based on your choice, this walk can be done at various time slots through the day. We would suggest slots closer to sunrise or late in the evening, as lesser vehicular traffic affords a better environment to listen to the songs performed.
Other things to note
As our starting and ending points are well apart, cab aggregators and public transport would be handy to get you to the starting point, which you can find at the what3words address ///lyricism.prestige.rams

A psychology graduate currently working as a full-time freelancer, I was born and brought up in Chennai. I am a performing Carnatic vocalist, with over 20 years of music experience. I have been a student of Bhavadhaarini Anantharaman, a disciple of renowned Indian Carnatic musician D. K. Pattammal, for more than 10 years and have performed on various stages across the country along with her. My husband, Ganesh, is a writer and journalist, with a strong fondness for the city we call home. Together, we wish to share some of the experiences that makes Chennai really special.

Where you'll be

The Marina beach is one of the longest natural urban beaches of the world. We will be walking its promenade, stepping in and out of the shoreline and stopping to take in the magnificence of the statues adorning the walkway.
We will be passing the Vivekananda House and visiting the Lighthouse, apart from taking in other landmarks along the way.

If we are doing the evening walk, we will be stopping for street food, options for which are aplenty.

India has such rich history - and this experience helped me experience that through super storytelling in an incredible location, with two extremely talented and caring people. We need more of these experiences! Three of us in our thirties and our parents all absolutely enjoyed it.

History - old and contemporary through stories and music, friendly and warm hosts ( Amrita and Ganesh) make this experience memorable. Ganesh and Amrita also represent the best of India- culture, modernism, global and a spirit of inquiry. The Vivekananda statue enroute, would say Aye to that! Pro tip!- Early mornings are tge best.

The hosts were very knowledgable about all histories from long time ago to recent issues which were so interesting. We have walked through marina beach around for 2 hours with full of interesting stories about famous politicians, poets and key persons who we have to know for understanding tamil history and culture. We were sitting alongside beach and listening the live classic song of Amritha(the lady host). She made me feel very special. Even if I was by myself, they made me feel safe and comfortable. Thanks a lot :-)
