What you'll do

First you must acquire a
“one day” Pacific fishing license for the day you’d like to fish crab. These are available online and you must have one to use my equipment (contact me for assistance). On fishing day we’ll meet in a beachfront neighbourhood of Vancouver. I will take you to the dock where I then give a lesson on baiting and setting your traps. You will also learn to identify your catch by species, size, and sex as It is necessary information to follow the legal parameters. I provide you with upto 2 traps each to use and I supervise as you set the traps. We soak the traps for a minimum of 15 minutes at which point you retrieve them under my supervision and we examine the catch. Once you are comfortable with the process I leave you alone to fish at your own pace. When you are finished (stay as late as 4pm!) for the day the traps will be prepared for storage and collected by myself. Any legal crab you catch are yours to keep. You’ll be targeting two species: Local Red Rock Crab are not available commercially and have some of the sweetest meat in their claws that you could ever eat in your life!! Pristine, Dungeness Crab are world renowned and the West Coast of North America is the only place to get them fresh out of the ocean!

On a 2012 coming of age road trip with my brother, my main goal here in Vancouver was to catch my own crab. We looked like quite the amateurs our first day on the dock and accordingly caught zero crabs! After great advice from those in the know and years now of experience, I still learn something on every pull of the trap. It’s such a simple endeavour but there’s always something new to learn and you never know what will be in your trap when you pull it up!

We had a fantastic time with Doug! He did an amazing job at coaching us and making us feel comfortable. He had great stories and insight which made the day even more fun! I highly recommend doing this if you come out to Vancouver. Thanks Doug for handling the crabs since we were too chicken too!

Doug is an absolute beauty with a great knowledge of crabbing. Caught a few rockcrabs (unfortunately no dungeoness') and super stoked regardless. Tried his best to make everything comfortable and made fishing super easy and accessible. Would recommend to anybody in Vancouver and tourists visiting, and would do it again!

This was a great day of chilling on a dock, shooting the breeze and fishing for crabs. It's a relaxed atmosphere and a great way to catch dinner, unwind or both. Had a good group and ended up chuckling away most of the day.

If you are a tourist (or maybe not even) and you want to something fun and relaxing, go for this one! We’re from out of town and so this is not something we usually do. Having someone teach us what to do really made our first time crabbing a better experience. Doug is very friendly and nice. He is also very accommodating and chill. And he knows how to treat his guests right. Used brand new bait! Not cheap. Great experience for a great value.

Doug was the most amazing instructor I have ever met. He was extremely patient, kind, professional, friendly, and informative. He took his time to explain everything that he thought would make our experience the greatest. He provided everything that we needed, and we longed for nothing. It was one of the greatest experiences we had in Vancouver and I am looking forward to booking this experience again. If you are thinking about booking, please do not hesitate, you will not regret it!

We were visiting Vancouver for a week and randomly stumbled across this while booking our Airbnb stay. Spending the day out on the dock with Doug was the perfect way to end our vacation. We ended up catching a couple of red rock crabs to take home with us to eat later (we caught a bunch of dungeness crab too, but they were all undersized). But the most rewarding part was the experience of just doing it and learning. Doug was super friendly, knowledgeable, and conscientious. He had some great stories to tell. He had some cool insights into Vancouver and the wildlife in the area. It was a fun time just hanging out with Doug for the day. If we lived in Vancouver, we'd probably do this fairly regularly. We are so glad that we came across this experience. We had an absolute blast!
