What you'll do
First you must acquire a
“one day” Pacific fishing license for the day you’d like to fish crab. These are available online and you must have one to use my equipment (contact me for assistance). On fishing day we’ll meet in a beachfront neighbourhood of Vancouver. I will take you to the dock where I then give a lesson on baiting and setting your traps. You will also learn to identify your catch by species, size, and sex as It is necessary information to follow the legal parameters. I provide you with upto 2 traps each to use and I supervise as you set the traps. We soak the traps for a minimum of 15 minutes at which point you retrieve them under my supervision and we examine the catch. Once you are comfortable with the process I leave you alone to fish at your own pace. When you are finished (stay as late as 4pm!) for the day the traps will be prepared for storage and collected by myself. Any legal crab you catch are yours to keep. You’ll be targeting two species: Local Red Rock Crab are not available commercially and have some of the sweetest meat in their claws that you could ever eat in your life!! Pristine, Dungeness Crab are world renowned and the West Coast of North America is the only place to get them fresh out of the ocean!
- Smaller groups or kids, $225. Ask me!
- 25% off adventures for
group of 4
Other things to note
It’s very important that you have the B.C. Tidal waters fishing license. You can’t catch crab without it!

On a 2012 coming of age road trip with my brother, my main goal here in Vancouver was to catch my own crab. We looked like quite the amateurs our first day on the dock and accordingly caught zero crabs! After great advice from those in the know and years now of experience, I still learn something on every pull of the trap. It’s such a simple endeavour but there’s always something new to learn and you never know what will be in your trap when you pull it up!

Super fun and different experience :) My wife and I had an amazing time with Doug he taught us everything we needed, how to tell apart male and female crabs, how to set up the traps and bait. We had a great day at the pier sharing thoughts and experiences and we got really lucky and caught almost the legal limit of crabs for that day.

Doug was super accommodating and easy to meet up with for this experience. He is full of knowledge when it comes to crab fishing and a super laid back guy. Had a great time just hanging out and hearing stories about the area and his life experiences. If you are in the Van area, book this tour with Doug. I can promise you, you will not be disappointed with the experience. Thanks again Doug, I will be sure to recommend you to people I know travelling to Van!

My partner and I had a great time fishing with Doug! We moved to Vancouver recently and wanted to explore our new city. Doug was fantastic--he was very knowledgeable and taught us all the ropes. We even caught our crab limit that we took home and made for dinner--what a bonus! I highly recommend this experience.

We had a fantastic time catching crabs with Doug today! My boys ages 5 and 7 thought it was one of the coolest things we have ever done, and my husband already is researching crab traps to buy so he can go again ASAP! Doug was super knowledgeable, friendly and relaxed. He was patient with our kids as well and helped us out as much as we wanted. We ended up catching so many crab and taking home 5 of them which was unexpected but awesome! We are locals to the area and we can’t wait to go again. Thanks again Doug for making my husband’s birthday really special.

What a wonderful first experience! We couldn't have asked for a better instructor to lead us through all the steps of crabbing from beginning to end. We enjoyed his insights and enthusiasm and left feeling confident that we could do this ourselves! We really recommend this fun, unique activity of you're planning a day trip. It was a great way to enjoy the West Coast!
