What you'll do

There are more murals in the San Francisco Mission District than any other neighborhood in the country! Besides the classically known alleys — Clarion and Balmy — many back streets filled with lesser known but equally stunning murals and works of art await your discovery.

You (and your companion) ride comfortably and safely in the front of this custom-built rickshaw imported from Indonesia. This rickshaw, known in Indonesia as a becak, enhances the sightseeing experience by having the driver behind you, out of your line of vision.

On our ride I share stories behind the art, show you hidden treasures of the neighborhood, and point out funky cafés, bars, and restaurants not always found by tourists.

We will end your ride at La Taqueria, the best known in the Mission, for an agua fresca or a mouthwatering taco. (An alternative will have to be selected on Monday or Tuesday, as La Taqueria is closed those days.)

Exploring the murals from the comfortable front seat of a becak is a unique and delightful experience.

With your safety in mind, this Experience is conducted in the open air, and you won’t be sitting with anyone unless you invited them. The passenger area is disinfected between rides, and the rain canopy can be used as a screen between you and the masked driver.

As a child visiting Indonesia, I fell in love with their trishaws, known locally as becaks (pronounced "bet-shaws"). After 20 years living here and working in tech, it was time for me to get outside and introduce visitors to my neighborhood in San Francisco. This is my second season leading the street art experience. I returned to Java to built a second becak for KaiTours this past winter.

Kai is the guy you are unknowingly lucky to meet, as endearing and creativly subtle as the art on the street. Would be a wee bit jelly if I saw us and wasn’t with us. 💯

Amazing and unique experience! Kai really has a passion for his personally built becak and his knowledge of the area and artists is admirable. We felt very safe and comfortable in the front seat with him guiding us down colorful alleys and telling great stories of artists near and far that have come to share their art in the SF streets. The graffiti and street art was stunning and he surprised us with pics he’d been taking of our tour at the end. He even gave us great local recommendations of places to enjoy a beverage or a snack following our ride. Would take a friend or relative to do that again if visiting the city and looking for a one-of-a-kind experience.

This is a fabulous experience if you want to understand the vibrant life and culture of the Mission District. Kai is a warm welcoming host/guide with a deep knowledge and understanding of the art and the artists. And getting to meet his pet cockatoo Poohbaer at the end of the tour was a treat. 5 Stars all the way!
