Kintsugi in 1 day

Tokyo, Japan

Experience hosted by Showzi

4 hours
Includes drinks, equipment
Up to 6 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

Learn the art of Kintsugi—repairing ceramics using lacquer dusted with precious metals. While it usually takes more than a month to finish a Kintsugi piece, I've developed this lesson so you can participate in this craft in one afternoon. With my guidance, you'll apply lacquer and 24-karat gold powder using the traditional techniques and methods. You'll leave with your own Kintsugi piece as a souvenir of the experience.
Other things to note
At the end of the session you'll be taking home your own Kintsugi ceramic cup, decorated with 24-karat gold. This is worth about 100 usd or 10,000 JPY.

I have the chance to have a fabulous kintsugi experience with Showzi sensei. The teaching of kintsugi with traditional Maki-e skills and urushi was very interesting, and the kindness of the persons for english translation made the day very special.

I had a wonderful time with Showzi. I appreciate the level of details that goes into his work and how he's still passionate in his craft. I aspire to have that level of dedication as a creative. His wife was kind and lovely. His mentee translator was enthusiastic and wonderful at translating.

My fiancé and I truly enjoyed our experience with Showzi, his wife and his interpreter Miki. They were all very warm and inviting. Miki did a good job interpreting and it was not difficult communicating with her or Showzi. I have a passion for making ceramics and kintsugi is beautifully connected to that. This experience was a great way to be introduced to this dying art. Showzi shows you the REAL way to do kintsugi and takes care explaining the history and process. I would recommend this experience if you are interested in kintsugi or even if you just want to spend an afternoon with great people, in an interesting art studio that is packed with curiosities, immersed in the culture of Japan.

What a wonderful afternoon! We learned so much about a disappearing art and felt truly connected to a special part of Japanese culture. You won't be disappointed going to this. I got to drink matcha tea out of a $60,000 cup so that alone was kind of worth it.
