What you'll do

We begin with a brief conversation about woven cloth, the history of weaving and the development of looms. I will demonstrate good technique for weaving with wool and introduce more tips as you weave on a vintage 4 shaft table loom set up with a wool warp designed to give you the opportunity to play with both colour and some weave structures. The warp is named Outlook, referencing Wellington's infamous southerly weather systems and the promise of spring. All yarns are provided however you are welcome to bring your favourite wool yarns and we can see if they can be incorporated into your work. Depending on your skill level and the motifs you chose to weave, you will take home your own piece of fabric that is suitable for you to construct into a cushion cover, a table runner, a diary cover or a purse. You can be new to weaving, or already have some experience and wish to learn more about weaving with New Zealand wool and about sustainable design. We will take a break for refreshments, which are provided.

Christine

I am excited to offer you the experience of building your own cloth, and having studio buddies for a little part of my week. After graduating with BDes Hons (Textile Design) from Massey University's College of Creative Arts, I established Niche Textile Studio to continue to explore the potential of woven wool cloth in contemporary, sustainable design. I weave almost exclusively with naturally coloured wool, grown and processed in New Zealand. The warm hues sit beautifully alongside contemporary interior materials including timbers, ceramics and metals. In 2018 NZ's Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet commissioned me to design and weave a blanket for the 3rd child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
