What you'll do

We begin with a brief conversation about woven cloth, the history of weaving and the development of looms.
I will demonstrate good technique for weaving with wool and introduce more tips as you weave on a vintage 4 shaft table loom set up with a wool warp designed to give you the opportunity to play with both colour and some weave structures. The warp is named Outlook, referencing Wellington's infamous southerly weather systems and the promise of spring. All yarns are provided however you are welcome to bring your favourite wool yarns and we can see if they can be incorporated into your work.
Depending on your skill level and the motifs you chose to weave, you will take home your own piece of fabric that is suitable for you to construct into a cushion cover, table runner, diary cover, wall hanging or purse.
You can be new to weaving, or already have some experience and wish to learn more about weaving with New Zealand wool and about sustainable design.
We will take a break for refreshments, which are provided.
During COVID restrictions each workshop will be delivered to a group of 1, 2 or 3 people who know each other and book together. Once a booking has been made I will close off availability for that workshop to people outside of your group.
Other things to note
COVID-19 When you book I will reduce workshop spaces so you (or YOUR group) will work with me only. If unwell/unable to travel refer to updates in Airbnb cancellation policy
ACCESS 2 external steps. Looms can be moved to avoid internal stairs... please message me before workshop

I am excited to offer you the experience of building your own cloth, and having studio buddies for a little part of my week.
After graduating with BDes Hons (Textile Design) from Massey University's College of Creative Arts, I established Niche Textile Studio to continue to explore the potential of woven wool cloth in contemporary, sustainable design.
I weave almost exclusively with naturally coloured wool, grown and processed in New Zealand. The warm hues sit beautifully alongside contemporary interior materials including timbers, ceramics and metals.
In 2018 NZ's Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet commissioned me to design and weave a blanket for the 3rd child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Where you'll be

My studio looks out across Lyall Bay, a well known surf and dog walking beach.
Lyall Bay has lots of lovely cafes within a 10 minute walk including Maranui Cafe and her little sister Queen Sally's Diamond Deli . You may like to visit them for breakfast or lunch before or after your time weaving.

10yo, 16yo, and Mom, all novices, had a great afternoon learning about weaving and its history in NZ while exploring our own creativity. All of us had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the gorgeous view of Lyall Bay while we worked.

A fascinating and deeply satisfying introduction to the world of weaving! Christine is passionate about the craft and it’s long history and makes it very accessible- even if you are a total newcomer to it as I was. I was absolutely thrilled to be able to come away from the experience with my own weaving! Highly recommended!

Christine’s workshop was really incredible. Not only did I learn so much, as I didn’t know much about weaving, I had a great time. I have left wanting to continue to practice! She knows her craft intimately and is incredibly thoughtful and passionate in her desire to teach others and grow her community. I also experienced another angle of the city I grew up in - her views of the coast are the best. Her warmth and easy nature made it a lot of fun. I felt completely at home in her beautiful space. I cannot wait to attend a more in-depth version. Highly recommended experience :)

I had a wonderful morning with Christine. She has a huge amount of expertise and knowledge she shares with warmth and kindness. I felt very fortunate to be able to share her home and teaching and have come away feeling inspired. It was a treat to see her beautiful work and I’m very happy with the lampshade I purchased too. Thanks for the great day Christine, I think I’m a convert!

This was a highlight of our visit to Wellington for both my daughter and I. Christine was very knowledgeable and a very kind and patient teacher. I fell in love with weaving from this experience and will be back to do more classes.
