Welcome, everyone to Enma-do! As the official tour guide to Enma-do, I would like to extend my hand to show the deep history and connections between this temple and the under-workings of Kyoto’s past to those wanting to understand a little more how this city came to be. Enma-do is rich in stories and history untold to even the locals of Kyoto that are waiting to be cracked open. Please, take this opportunity to venture past the normal tourist spots of Kyoto and experience a truly unique meeting with the furious God of Judgement, Lord Enma!

Where you'll be

Built in the Heian Period of Japan (794-1185), Enma-do was a temple to lead the dead past the Gates of Hell and into the Court of Lord Enma, who would ultimately decide the fate of the bodiless souls. Lord Enma, accompanied by his two advisors, is often depicted as a wrathful god with no bounds of mercy for any being. With his association with death, many in the past used to conduct funerals in the nearby Mount Funaoka to appease this god.
