What you'll do

Find out what you can eat in the woods! We'll hike in the lovely Santa Cruz mountains where I'll guide you on a beautiful, quiet 2.5-mile hike in the unique coastal oak & redwood forest. Together we'll learn the ancient ways of identifying edible and medicinal mushrooms, plants, roots, flowers, nuts and seeds (depending on the season). Along the way we'll discuss proper harvesting and preparation techniques while connecting to the beauty and abundance of our ecosystem.

This experience is a fun, hands-on way to connect to what can feed, heal and harm us in the wild. You'll walk away with a whole new appreciation and understanding of nature! The hike is doable for all skill levels. See you on the trail!

Other things to note:
Secure your own transportation to Verve Coffee and we'll caravan to the hike start. Bring: layers (it can get chilly in the redwoods), water bottle and comfortable hiking shoes. Optional: hiking poles, camera, hat, sunglasses.

I'm a Santa Cruz local, with over 10 years experience as a naturalist. I've traveled all over the world foraging and adventuring outdoors. I turned my passion into a business when I founded Mountain Sea Adventures, an outdoor adventure company connecting people to mother nature. My experience is not manufactured or forced, my routes are uncrowded and peaceful. For me, foraging is a way of life: we make a connection with our natural world through being nourished and healed by plants, mushrooms and trees.

I lived in Santa Cruz long ago and brought my family there on a short vacation to share it with them. This was the highlight of our trip. The kids (8 and 12) loved it. Caitlyn is fantastic. I have a new appreciation for the forest - for the rest of the trip, I kept noticing plants and wondering what they might taste like or what healing properties they might have . I felt closer to the wild world. I ordered a foraging book as soon as I got home . Just a wonderful, peaceful, magical experience .

We had so much fun on this excursion and loved learning about (and eating) the wild edibles of Santa Cruz! Caitlin was so knowledgeable and thoughtful in her presentation. I was already into foraging but since this experience, my husband has gotten into it too so now it is something fun and soul filling we can do together. I would highly recommend this experience!

Enjoyable afternoon with a lot of interesting information regarding common plants that are surprisingly edible. Caitlin has a great personality , friendly and connected with everyone. We would suggest eating ahead of time if hike is during mealtime. we appreciated her holistic approach.
