What you'll do
Visitors to the sanctuary get to meet all of the animals. We take a walk through their habitats and talk about where they came from, what hardships they have faced and how they have overcome them. Some of the animals get snacks during the tour, other animals prefer to get pets instead, while others might prefer a different activity.
During the tour we meet and interact with pigs, chickens, ducks, goats, special needs animals and sometimes the sanctuary dogs.
We visit the rescued hens and turkeys who love to flock around your feet and ask for their favorite treats.
Next are the big pigs, Lucy, Ethel and Josie. They are 500lbs of curiosity and love. Ethel will even give you about kisses and many of the pigs like belly scratches.
Our goats greet visitors by jumping on the gate to say hello. They are very curious to meet you and tug on all your zippers and buttons.
Finally we meet our special needs pigs Fiona and Penelope who also love getting treats.
Other things to note
Wear appropriate shoes and clothing. Boots or waterproof shoes are recommended. During the summer sneakers are good too. Please do not wear high heels or clothes you would hate to get dirty.

I have been working in animal welfare and research for over 10 years. In 2017 I left my career as a college science instructor to cofound a farm animal rescue which came to be known as Heartwood Haven. We have rescued over 500 farm animals ranging from chickens to goats to pigs and even special needs animals. All animals here are rescued and living their best lives.
About the organization: Heartwood Haven
The mission statement of Heartwood Haven is: 1) To provide sanctuary and care for neglected, abused or homeless animals. 2) To provide and find homes for mistreated animals in need. 3) To promote adoption as the most responsible act to help homeless animals. 4) To promote respect and compassion for all animals. 5) To provide education to the community about our responsibility to be the guardians
This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Heartwood Haven.

Where you'll be
The sanctuary is located on 2.5 acres of beautiful forested land. When you arrive, please park along the street outside the gates and someone will meet you at the front gate. Please do not enter the property on your own. The sanctuary is located at our house. You can tell that you have arrived when you turn up a private road and arrive at two green gates with “No Trespassing” signs.

What a special place. It’s heartwarming to meet someone like Kate who has dedicated so much love and energy to rescuing these animals. She is extremely knowledgeable and her tour is excellent and eye-opening. I’d recommend it to any animal lover and we plan on visiting again.

We were looking for a fun alternative to visiting a zoo with the kids. Kate has so many pigs and ducks and turkeys to visit, and you really get up close and personal, getting to feed and pet them. She has a lot of knowledge about the animals, and will answer all your questions and help you to feed and interact with the animals. They are doing great work caring for and rehabilitating their pigs and other animals, to help them live their best lives!
