What you'll do

Session 1 " Book Binding Workshop" 1. select book cover ( you can choose from our collection of old kimono textile / old cloth textile / varieties of fabrics ) 2. stitch the interior pages of the book by hand 3. cut the edge of the book to size 4. measure the book cover & other materials 5. set and arrange all paper and make book cover 6. assemble the interior of the book and book cover 7. press by hot iron with candle 8. use pressing tools to press book 9. glue on the cover of the book Session 2 ” Embossing ”  1. choose one or two words from Name/ Date/ Kyoto. Or, one line of your expression like poem or philosophy. 2. choose letter style from letter presses ( Western or Japanese/ Kanji -old Chinese characters ) 3. design to set letter press on the back page of your book cover 4. practice the technic of embossing several times 5. try to emboss with golden leaf ( silver / other colors ) please check photos for each process. -finish

Handmade bookbinding using traditional silk kimono fabric is a coveted craft that results in a beautiful original functional work of art. Most book binding shops have turned into automated factories. I'm Tsutomu, a master bookbinder, has run my authentic hand-made bookbinding studio for over 55 years ago. Every step of the process has meaning, making it an artistic and meditational experience. Giving lecture of traditional bookmaking at the Universities of art & product design for 8 years. And experienced event of the workshop of Embossing for the Kyoto city on 2017NOV.

Where you'll be

Small studio on the ground floor of our four-storied family house. Located in the Kitano Hakubaicho district, one of the 4 original geisha entertainment areas, in the shadow of the Golden Temple. Pretty flowers welcome you into our antique bookbinding studio. Lots of letterpress, materials and tools of bookbinding including beautiful kimono silks are arranged in an interesting and joyful studio atmosphere for a hands on workshop.
