What you'll do

We will meet in the morning for a hike around Bald River Ralls (about 2.5 miles) and discuss the nature that we happen across. This is different in each month and shows a variety of beauty and intricacies to view multiple times a year. There is a beautiful rock face (with delicious native berries) that we will climb up then descend to have a picnic by the river. We can complete the loop or turn around at this point - whichever you prefer. When we arrive back at the falls, you can swim, or we can go to the bakery together. Tellico Grains is famous for their home baked bread and fresh pizzas, but they have sweet treats as well.

If the bakery is not your thing, there is also a small pottery shop and a local bookstore with recent novels and beautiful collector's pieces. If you wish to join me in the wood shop, you can see the grains and colors of all the beautiful trees you previously saw in their natural state.

Please keep in mind that Sundays affect business hours of local attractions.

Welcome! I have worked for an area forester for five years, have fire training, and a hearty knowledge of trees and plants in the area. I write articles for forest management plans highlighting the unique aspects of the land and inject fun and interesting tales into it. Let's take a look at the forest together and see how trees are creatures in their own right with a difference in communication, lifestyle, and even movement.

Where you'll be

Bald River Falls is a popular tourist spot in the area where you can swim in several pools as the water falls to each. The hike will be around this point where I can introduce you to several camping sites that are close but hidden. The bakery is a down home spot specializing in sandwiches and bread. Downtown has cafes, bookstores, and even a lumber yard that specializes in custom furniture.

We had a wonderful hike with Maria! She is very, very knowledgeable about the plants and trees in the area. Maria is very personable and was a delight to hike with. Highly recommend if foraging is appealing to you. The cantaloupe snack from her own garden was such a nice touch. Thanks for a memorable day, Maria!

My teenage daughter and I loved our hike with Maria! She was exceptional and the trail and falls were amazing. Really beautiful views and some challenging terrain made for a great experience for us! We are novices (though active) but Maria assisted along the way, when needed, to permit us to complete and enjoy the "ups and downs" of this moderate trail. And, boy does she know her stuff! We learned so much about the flora of the forest. Maria also went out of her way to provide the coffee and pastry snacks -- which were delicious and appreciated -- even though the famous Tellico Grains Bakery was closed on Sunday. We definitely would join Maria for this hike again, hopefully when we have more time (had to get the kid to camp) to complete the loop! She said it goes deeper into a totally different forest space, more back country than river's edge. Putting it on "the list!"

I chose this experience because I love hiking and I love learning about herbs and foraging. Maria was very knowledgeable about the plant life, very accommodating, and genuinely interested in the guest experience. THIS IS NOT A BABY TRAIL you will be immersed in the beauty of nature. Beautiful views, and maybe an organic earth treat ( in addition to the snacks that Maria provides) GREAT TOUCH! I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a REAL hike and isn’t afraid to get in the THICK of nature. Maria has a lot to share and is very friendly. It was a liberating experience I totally felt my mind expand. By the end of the hike I was identifying trees and herbs on my own and eating Sourwood leaves.
