What you'll do

This tour takes visitors through the political core of Washington DC! From the original L'Enfant city plan, to the tumultuous construction of the Capitol and Grounds, the rise of the magnificent Beaux Arts Library of Congress and imposing Supreme Court, and into the present day. Prolific designers like Thomas Jefferson, Robert Mills, Frederick Law Olmstead, and Daniel Burnham will feature prominently. Controversy, chaos, and red tape abound! A tour not to be missed by architecture and history enthusiasts.
Other things to note
We'll be going through two security checks during the tour, and there's no food or liquid (including water) allowed in the US Capitol. Feel free to have water, but be ready to dump it mid-way thru.

Carolyn and Sam of DC Design Tours are two history buff architecture nerds with a passion for story telling!

Carolyn is a former architect and life-long lover of all things brick and mortar. She prefers to talk about buildings than draw them. The District has been her home since 2006, and when not guiding, you can find her counting columns at the National Building Museum (there are 152) and traipsing through Rock Creek National Park.

Sam is an enthusiast for architectural design, history, and talking a mile a minute. Originally from the Bluegrass State, he's a full fledged Washingtonian now.

Where you'll be

We’ll begin in the Great Hall of Union Station. This crossroads of Presidents, diplomats, and politicians has seen drastic change, from inaugurations, to World Wars, and even a runaway train! We’ll proceed to the steps of the Supreme Court, then across the street to the East facade of the U.S. Capitol Building, before heading inside the Library of Congress. Finally, through an underground tunnel to wrap up inside the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center.

Fantastic tour. Carolyn is clearly passionate about the subject matter and her expertise is impressive. The tour is very well structured and covers lot of ground in the two hours allocated. Lots of fascinating characters and anecdotes. Highly recommended.

Carolyn is a lovely host. I enjoyed leaning more in the way of history than I expected. She is funny, down to earth and knows her stuff! It was entertaining, educational and fun.

Carolyn and Sam have created fun, interesting and 5 ⭐️ s! I highly recommend their tours of DC. My husband and i went on the Georgetown tour on Saturday morning with Sam, which far exceeded our expectations. Sam is passionate, energetic and highly knowledgeable making him a great guide. Then on Monday, we did the Architectural Tour with Carolyn and toured the Library of Congress(my favorite), and Union Hall. This two hour tour flew by! Both were outstanding, and we are now spoiled, only looking for tours by DC Design Tours (Sam & Carolyn). I would love to do the Embassy Walk with them on our next visit. Thank you!!

Sam was a great guide - he was personable, had a lot of information to share and injected the right amount of humor into the tour. The 2 hours flew by.
