What you'll do
You will be driven into the bush to where the Neema Women's Group meets and will be greeted by traditional dances, which you can either observe or participate in. Then you will enjoy a homemade traditional Taita lunch and will be introduced to our group, its history, and its goals. Finally, you will spend some time learning our crafts: elephant dung paper and paper bead jewelry. We make these crafts by recycling waste paper and magazines from local businesses and by upcycling the elephant dung found locally. Thousands of African elephants call the Kasigau corridor their home between Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks, so there's never a shortage of dung! You'll be able to make your own crafts and shop for souvenirs with a women's group that is truly unique in the Taita-Taveta region.
Other things to note
We are a hardworking group of rural women who are thrilled to share our culture and crafts. You will be safe, cared for, and comfortable with us. Asanteni sana (Thank you very much in Kiswahili)!

I am the director of a women's microfinance organization and active participant in the empowerment of women and girls. I am a community leader, a conservationist, and a mother of three. I've been making elephant dung paper and paper beads since 2012 as a member of the Neema Women's Group. I look forward to sharing our crafts and culture with guests.
Where you'll be
We will conduct the entire experience from the Neema Women's Group meeting space in the bush outside Maungu. It is picturesque and very safe, and you'll see both Maungu Town and the interior communities on your drive to and from our experience.

If you're on the fence, book this experience now! We had a wonderful experience and cultural exchange with the women's group and learned so much. Our kids loved making dung paper and paper beads with the ladies and we all really enjoyed dancing and sharing a meal together. I can't recommend this excursion enough!
