What you'll do

You will meet me at my home in Los Alamos which is a 50 minute drive from Santa Fe. When you schedule your experience, kids under 12 are free with an adult. You will then follow me one mile to the lot where you will meet 13 dairy goats, 20+ chickens, 2 turkeys, 1 duck, and the Dottie Llama. I will introduce you to each goat and have treats for you to feed them. I will talk to you about the two breeds I raise, Oberhaslis and Nigerian Dwarfs, and explain a bit about the differences in the breeds. Most people leave with a goat that was their favorite. I will also show you the chickens and you can feed them and depending on the time of day, we may find some eggs, which you are welcome to take with you. We will also talk to the turkeys. My tom turkey very vocal and will come right up to you and do his turkey strut. If you are patient, the Dottie Llama will eat some sweet feed. She is shy. I will explain to you Dottie's job is to keep the predators away - coyotes. She has been on the job 3 years. At anytime, you can pose for pictures with the animals.

I raise dairy goats registered with the American Dairy Goat Association for show, heritage breed red bourbon turkeys and a breed of bantam chicken known as the Mille Fleur. I have a master's degree in Agricultural Science, served as a 4-H Leader. For the past two years, my goats won first place at the Colorado State Fair Dairy Goat Obstacle Course. I only breed 1 to 2 goats a year striving to achieve dairy goats with the best features for show. I base my breedings on genetics obtained from the American Dairy Goat Association. Please see my Everybody Needs a Walk with a Goat experience.

Where you'll be

This is a lot within a space with 100 other lots that are home to horses, goats, chickens, donkeys, etc. My lot is a fenced area of 200 ft by 60 ft with a few barn like structures and two chicken coops. On the lot there will be feed for you to offer the animals and a few chairs to sit in if you want to sit while you pet the goats. People who are interested in backyard chickens will learn what it takes to setup and take care of chickens.

More tips

Kids will need to be supervised. My two larger goats are 130 pounds. It is all about the food with the goats and they will butt you out of the way.
