What you'll do

After welcoming guests into the studio and giving a quick tour, I will demonstrate throwing on the wheel and/or hand-building techniques, depending on the preference of the participants. I have four electric wheels and lots of table space and experience to assist you throughout the creative process. Playing with clay is a lot of fun and can be very therapeutic.

Every student is different, and everyone receives individual instruction. You may want to think, in advance, about what you'd like to make or just show up and see what happens.
You will usually end up with two to three pieces to be glazed in a food safe neutral colour and fired by me.
Allow two to eight weeks, depending on my firing schedule, for drying, trimming, firing, glazing, and firing again. Shipping is an extra cost and will require a follow-up email. There is an additional $10 packaging and drop off fee to be paid by you.

I also regularly offer six week sessions if you are going to be in town.
Other things to note:
Please contact me about availability. If you don't see a time slot that you would like, ask me, and if I can do it I will add it to the schedule for booking. I'm pretty flexible.
If you are a group contact me to make a private booking experience as for two to four people there is a 10% discount and a 20% discount for a group of five to eight.

Katherine has been a ceramic artist for decades and has studied at Emily Carr School of Art and Design and Kootenay School of the Arts.
She makes functional ceramics, exhibits work from her sculpture practice, and has been teaching classes in her studio for years to people of all ages and experience levels.
She would love to welcome curious and adventurous visitors in to her studio to learn the joys of working in clay.
Her bright and peaceful studio is located on the ground level of a house with an Airbnb room upstairs (www.airbnb.ca/rooms/30982370) and is close to downtown Nelson.

We were a small group of 4 and I would say that was perfect. We had personal space and Covid safety. We each had our own wheel which Katherine had all set up for us before hand. She was a great teacher and helped us all to be successful with our projects. 😊 She is easy going and very helpful. We all left feeling proud of what we had accomplished and we all want to do it again!!! Thank you Katherine! It was a great day!!

Absolutely loved this experience! Katherine was a great host, she is very knowledgeable and helpful throughout the whole process. She makes sure all your items turn out and lends a helping hand when you need it to correct your piece on the wheel. I’ve always wanted to do a pottery class and this was exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for creating such an awesome experience !!

Was a fun learning environment to try something I’ve never tried before. Got to learn how to make pottery on a wheel. Would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to try pottery or build on what they know. We did this after a day of skiing and was a fun way to end the day!
