What you'll do
We'll meet up in the most dramatic, central, section of Hadrian's Wall and hike along and then return north of this ancient frontier of the Roman Empire for about 7 kilometres (4 miles). [A longer, full day, hike is also available - see my other Experience]. We'll explore the natural and historic landscape of Wall country, learn how to interpret the shape of the countryside and gain insight into the processes and people that shaped it. You'll acquire basic skills that will help you begin to satisfy your curiosity about the natural landscapes all around us. The countryside around you will never seem the same again. The weather can be changeable and picking good weather days well in advance can be a challenge; so days additional to the calendar are available, please contact me to arrange a date. Pick up from local accommodation and stations possible.
I’m a northern boy, raised in Cumbria, did my degree in Newcastle. With interludes abroad and across the rest of the UK, I’ve been hiking, running and biking across the north of England for more than 50 years. So I’m local but also a professional geologist and trained Hadrian’s Wall guide. I surveyed parts of Northumberland and Cumbria for the British Geological Survey and retired as a director. I was a science consultant to the BBC for 6 landscape documentaries. Today I am a trustee of 3 northern environmental charities and lead hikes in Northumberland and the mountains of the Lake District.

Where you'll be
Thousands of people visit The Wall every year - I want to give small groups of people the opportunity to take a deeper and more insightful look. See the Wall from viewpoints few venture to, look at the whole landscape through a professional geologist's eyes. Walk and talk about how and why Hadrian built his Wall and explore the rich history of this countryside before and after the Roman Empire. And what its like being part of this community today

You don't need to be a long distance hiker, just comfortable walking around 4 miles in undulating country. No degrees in geology or history needed, just natural curiosity. Other dates possible, message me.
