What you'll do
I am a (former) high school science teacher and am comfortable tailoring the experience to each group's desires. In other words, we'll wing it! Generally speaking, we will start off by discussing a broad overview of the roasting process, with the goal of determining what style of coffee you prefer and how to achieve your desired flavor and body profile.
We will discuss the physics and chemistry of the actual roasting process. Then, we'll learn how to use a couple of different roasters -- both a super-inexpensive DIY modified popcorn-popper, as well as a reasonably priced consumer-level roaster. You'll be very hands-on; my goal is for you to walk away feeling like you could go do this on your own.
Once the beans have cooled, we'll brew up a cup of fresh-as-it-gets coffee and you can enjoy the fruits (beans?) of your labor via a couple of my favorite brewing methods that you may have not heard of before. You'll go home with your freshly roasted coffee (though you really should wait at least 12 hours before imbibing to let some of the more volatile gases diffuse).
Other things to note
If you don't like coffee--this probably won't be terribly satisfying. If you do like coffee, you'll leave wondering why you haven't been doing this yourself.

I've been a slave to coffee for decades, and have been roasting my own for several years now. I have seen the coffee process from the very beginning: harvesting and fermenting beans, multiple methods of roasting, all the way through to advanced brewing methods. I won't claim to be a professional-level roaster, but as a science-minded coffee addict, I do manage to roast a dang fine cup. I love the process of roasting because it allows you to get to know coffee at a much deeper level, including geographical and cultural influences of where the beans are sourced. Plus, you can roast the type of coffee you enjoy best (or at least try to!). As a former science teacher, we'll keep things fun and fluid.
Note that the scheduled times are, in general, easily re-scheduled to fit your schedule. If you need a different time, please ask.

Where you'll be
We'll be in my in my backyard and/or home for the entire experience. We'll be protected from rain and snow, but if its cold, you'll want to dress properly as we'll be outdoors for the roasting (it's too smokey to do indoors as a married man!). If it's sunny, a wide brimmed hat would be wise (though I'll try to put our workstation in the shade).

Our class with Ryan was great and something I would definitely recommend to any other friends who are interested in coffee and learning more about it. Even as someone with three years of experience as a barista, Ryan was able to teach me some things I didn't know and his background as a teacher really shines through. It was great to get the hands-on experience of roasting coffee beans and I was pleasantly surprised how simple the process is. Definitely looking forward to using what I learned now that I'm back home!

Why didn’t we learn how to roast earlier?! Fun, engaging, and educational. Ryan was easy going, friendly, and a great teacher (he used to be a science teacher!). He has many different types of coffee beans to choose from! We had a nice time chatting after class as well.
