What you'll do

Paint a memory of Ottawa on a 6” by 6” canvas. It will be a travel souvenir you are proud to display! When I travel, I crave experiences where I interact with locals and gain a deeper appreciation for a city's culture through art. In the heart of Canada's capital city, I plan to provide you with both opportunities. Throughout history, masters like Picasso and Leonardo da Vinci used oil paint. Emily Carr, Tom Thomson, and many other iconic Canadian artists also used the medium. Oils can be intimidating to paint with but I will guide you in putting your favourite travel memory on canvas with the tips and tricks I employ every day as a professional artist. As part of the package, I'll share about why I love my city and where to enjoy its thriving art scenes! The experience lasts about 3 hours. Itinerary: - Arrive at my studio; - Enjoy my favourite teas and snacks of fruit; - Discuss painting styles, composition, and colours; - Choose the memory you wish to capture; - Paint as I guide you, step by step, through my process; - Decide to have the wet canvas shipped (at cost) or wrapped for travel in a frame ($100); and - Leave having lived a few hours as a professional artist!

Jocelyn

I am an Ottawa-based oil painter trained under Canadian landscape artist Gordon Harrison since 2011. I began showing and selling my work in 2014 and now my paintings live in over 60 private art collections worldwide and adorn the covers of six young adult fiction titles by Dog-Eared Books Publishing House. By day I work in disability services and consult on accessible events and communications. I'm active in creative communities that value connection, collaboration, and inclusivity. My passion lies where art and accessibility intersect because everyone deserves to be artistic!

Where you'll be

The experience is inside my painting studio on the 2nd floor of a historic home in downtown Ottawa. It is easily accessible by car and public transit and it's just a 15 minute walk from Parliament Hill. I have partnered with a fully accessible venue in my neighbourhood with access-friendly entrances and washrooms, should you require. Ask me and I'd be happy to arrange for a fully accessible experience!

Things to keep in mind

Cancellation policy

Any experience can be canceled and fully refunded within 24 hours of purchase, or at least 7 days before the experience starts.

Communication policy

Always communicate through Airbnb. To protect your payment, never transfer money or communicate outside of the Airbnb website or app.

Guest requirements

Up to 2 guests ages 15 and up can attend. Guests are absolutely not required to have prior painting experience! However, if you happen to be an experienced painter, I will tailor our itinerary accordingly.

Government ID

You’ll need to take a picture of yourself that matches the photo on your ID. This is so Airbnb can confirm who’s actually going on the experience. You’ll only have to do this once.

More tips

IMPORTANT: Oil paint takes weeks to dry. I offer to ship your dry painting at cost ($25 - $75) or I secure the wet canvas in a custom frame and wrap it up for safe travels inside your luggage ($100).
