What you'll do

A fun day visiting several top bird reserves the coast and the Avalon Marshes We will walk through a mixture of different habitats to maximise the variety of birds we may see at a slow but steady pace with expert tuition throughout. First, we will visit the WWT reserve at Steart Marshes, approx 45 mins drive away We will walk to a couple of the hides that overlook tidal lagoons good for waders such as avocet, redshank, lapwing along with shelduck and little egrets We shall also pop to the coast to look for curlews, herons and any other passing migrants. Later we will move back inland for a look at West Sedgemoor, home to Somerset’s crane population. We will also visit Athelney to see where King Alfred the Great ‘burnt the cakes’ en route to a super traditional Somerset pub for lunch (included). Later we will visit a couple of top nature reserves at the heart of Somerset's Avalon Marshes complex which has huge numbers of wildfowl, egrets, ducks, and there may be a chance of seeing the elusive bittern. In the winter as dusk falls there are the famous starling murmurations and in the spring & summer, there is always the possibility to see hawking hobbies and marsh harriers. All-year-round the Levels are well stocked with many varieties of wetland birds - so no two days are ever the same. Return by approx 5pm

Join Graeme for a day of birdwatching on the amazing Somerset Levels.
Graeme is the joint owner (with his wife Kay) of Somerset Birdwatching Holidays running successful tours to this beautiful part of South West England. Having been a keen birdwatcher all his life Graeme cut his birding teeth in the Scottish Highlands, never believing for a minute that things could get any better… That is until he moved to Somerset in 2001. Graeme likes nothing better than sharing his passion for birds to beginners and experienced birders alike, using his local knowledge to see some of the wealth of different species that can be found across Somerset's rich and beautiful landscape.

Really enjoyable and informative day. Our guide was super well informed about the birds and locations we visited. He gave us enough time to to enjoy watching the birds and never made us feel hurried or rushed. It was a full day out and about, but so enjoyable we didn’t notice the time passing.

It was a privilege to spend the day with Graeme. He was clearly an expert in the bird life of Somerset (and lands beyond) and shared that expertise with enthusiasm, energy and humour. He was very easy company, the transport was very comfortable and his local knowledge meant we zipped between birdwatching locations quickly and through wonderful country lanes. We love birds but are not much above entry level in terms of our own skills. Graeme’s “eye” picked out birds from the landscape that we almost certainly would have missed and he had one of those great telescopes that gets you in amongst, even when you are 100’s of metres away. And we saw the cranes which was what we had hoped for. In fact, quite a few alongside 3 sorts of egrets and a range of other more familiar birds, nonetheless worth watching, were in our collection for the day. We would certainly recommend this day for the opportunities to see nature in a range of unique habitats, in the company of a friendly and generous expert, for the rather good lunch, not burnt, but in a pub called the King Alfred and its overall good value. Go with an open mind about what you will see but being with Graeme certainly increased the chances exponentially that we might see what we hoped for.
