What you'll do

Visiting the temples are best done as an early morning activity... a great way to start the day!

Start at 6 AM near the Mylapore tank and proceed to the most ancient 7th century Saivite temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Stroll around the temple tank while listening to the legend and interesting history behind the temple's current location and the colonial controversies. Sit down inside the temple premises listening to the morning music and activities for a discussion on the Hindu way of life, and any other questions you may have. We will then take an auto rickshaw and watch the sun glittering on the sea along the second largest urban beach in the world, and walk to the 8th century Vaishnavite temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Learn the temple history and legend, and pray with the locals, while marveling at the architecture, serene atmosphere and the buzz of early morning activity at the temple. If you like, proceed to have a delicious vegetarian South Indian Tamil breakfast at one of the hidden local eateries that is open only for breakfast and mid evening snacks.

I am a local Chennaiite, and a practising Hindu. Hinduism is broadly divided to Saivism and Vaishnavism, and having one parent practice each, kind of makes me an expert on the differences in worshipping practices, lifestyle and even food habits. As a Japanese language expert, I routinely take tourists and expats on tours of the temples, and help them appreciate our temples, which are more than just marvelous architecture; they are the window to the ancient Tamil way of life.
