What you'll do

A bike tour of Governors Island, historically a 172-acre military base that is just an 8-minute ferry ride from Wall Street, and now is home to the Governors Island National Monument. I have a specific path and agenda, but it's flexible. The tour covers the past, present and future of Governors Island. The island is officially recognized by the New York state legislature as the birthplace of New York being the first land Dutch settlers set foot upon. From 1800 to 1996, it was used as a military facility by the US Federal Government and houses three 18th century fortresses. In 2003, the island was returned to the state and city of New York. It has since become a unique, modern, urban incubator for arts, science and cultural institutions and also has a large award-winning public park. We'll also discuss modern additions like an urban farm, and artist collectives, even a public high school! Like the Highline Park in Manhattan, the Island is creating an innovative, new model of an urban public space. I've studied a great deal about the island and am able to answer most questions guests have put to me. I aim toward tailoring my talks to my guests' specific areas of interests.

Where you'll be

Recently open to the public, Governors Island is just being discovered by tourists. It's a unique—and very family-friendly—day-trip for active NYC visitors. Before or after the tour, you'll find many arts, cultural and sporting activities as well as great food and drinks! The park also offers amazing views of Lady Liberty, NYC skylines and harbor, and has about 50 hammocks and countless places to relax and enjoy a beautiful New York day outdoors.

This is a really great tour of the island. Scott knew a lot about both old and new elements. Scott was organized and we enjoyed the tour a lot! This is a really fabulous part of NYC and as excellent for locals to visit as it is for tourists.

The weather was nice and I really enjoyed this tour. It was my first bike tour and my first time at Governor's Island. Scott was great! He was very friendly and made me feel very welcome - I think he enjoyed the tour as much as I did! He really knows and cares about the history of G.I. and it made the tour even more interesting than just a cursory tour. Highly recommend the tour and the guide!

Scott was exactly what you'd want in a guide—knowledgable, affable, able to answer questions on the fly. I'm not a huge history buff myself; I took this tour because I'm scoping out tours for some out-of-town friends who are really into American history. So I was pleasantly surprised to find myself engrossed in the history of Governor's Island thanks to Scott's entertaining yet informed approach. I've lived in NYC for 20 years and learned more about the city (not just the island) in one morning than I have all year!

Scott is a terrific guide— not just because he seems to know every possible detail of the Island, but also because he cares so deeply for its future. He has volunteered there for years because of his passion for history and for public parks. He also is flexible about where to go, happy to take photos, and knowledgeable about what’s coming next. Much more meaningful than doing this on our own.
