Make your own hologram

New York, United States

Experience hosted by Martina

2 hours
Includes food, drinks, equipment
Up to 5 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

In this experience you will make a hologram and have a inside tour of the exhibition Holographic Embodiment.

The HoloCenter on Governors Island is an seasonal art center within a historic building. The Island is a short ferry ride from Manhattan or Brooklyn. Once a strategic military and coast guard base the Island is now home to arts, ecological research, and a stunning park on the harbor.

We will start with snacks on the porch to get to know each other – these are small group experiences.

I will then give you a tour of the holograms in the exhibition Holographic Embodiment learning about the artists who created the works and their techniques.

In the laser studio each person will see how holograms are recorded and create their own hologram.

We will then head upstairs to experience an interactive installation and draw within Augmented Reality. Our discussion will include different types of visual media and what makes images 'holographic'.
Other things to note
If you have an object you would like to capture in your hologram, bring it. Sturdy light colored objects work well. The size on an oyster works well...or we have plenty in the treasure box.

Hi, I'm a specialist in holographic imaging and the Creative Director of the Center for the Holographic Arts, HoloCenter in New York.

My work with holograms combines physics, spatial design and storytelling. My artworks include animated holograms, multi-dimensional visual structures and installations that explore the emergent and resonant aspects of our experience.

In the last few years I have moved away from making my own art to build the HoloCenter, engage in collaborative research, mentor artists and teach students about light and optics.

As the staff curator at the HoloCenter I design exhibitions that enable a wide audience to engage with holographic concepts.

About the organization: Center for the Holographic Arts

To promote engagement with holographic artwork the Center for the Holographic Arts – HoloCenter develops and presents exhibitions at the seasonal HoloCenter on Governors Island and other pop-up venues. Our Space:Light and Pulse Laser Holography programs support artistic experimentation with spatial and optical media. We inspire and educate with workshops that combine art, science and technology.

Where you'll be

We will be at the HoloCenter an innovative art center in the historic postmasters house on Governors Island. The building is a historic landmark having hosted Mikhail Gorbachev and François Mitterrand.

Governors Island lay empty for almost 10 years until it was opened to the public in 2005. The HoloCenter began operating a seasonal art center on the Island in 2014 and began restoring the postmasters house in 2016.

What a neat experience to see firsthand how a hologram is made! And to make one ourselves. Martina is knowledgeable, friendly and fun.

Martina’s hologram-making experience was a delight. There was a nice mixture of learning and doing, and we were actively engaged the whole time. Martina had a lovely sense of humor and welcoming manner, and I’d recommend this class to anyone even slightly intrigued by holograms.

Our hologram workshop with Martina was amazing! For one, it's on Governor's Island, which is such a unique, interesting place, and the building the HoloCenter is in is a little creepy, but in a good way. Martina led us around the exhibition, explaining how the (truly amazing) holograms on display were made and then we spent the rest of the time making our own with items we'd brought. It was fun learning what goes into making them and we all walked away with pretty awesome holograms, if I say so myself. I highly recommend this experience if you're looking for something unique, memorable and fun. Thank you, Martina!

Martina was an amazing host and a very patient instructor. She's extremely knowledgable and started off the workshop with a tour of the museum. During the workshop, she gives you time and space to explore your artistic sensibilities as you compose your hologram images. My mum and I both enjoyed the workshop and we walked away with a really cool hologram to remember our New York trip by!

It was amazing to make a real hologram with Martina. She’s a pro and answers any questions you may have. We made two holograms and she was patient for everyone to try their best. I would recommend thinking about the object you would bring to capture upfront, so you can really make something unique to you
