What you'll do
Start your day visiting a unique prehispanic ceremonial site while learning how it's ancient astronomers designed the architectonic features in order to follow the cycles of the sun, the moon and Venus. Through the eyes of Dr. Rossana Quiroz, who was part of the excavation team, we will explore the original pilgrimage route, understand how archaeological spaces, materials, burials, carbon dating, DNA and landscapes tell a long untold story, and submerge ourselves under the cosmological spell of Mesoamerican sacred entities and philosophical concepts. We believe that the astronomical features of this temples are best understood when explained by the same researcher that actually discovered such features. The visit will be folowed by a prehispanic lunch at the Museum of Prehispanic Astronomy, featuring local and seasonal fresh ingredients. Vegan or vegetarian dishes are available under advance notice. The menu is inspired in the Mesoamerican calendar and diet. After dessert, we will visit the museum and round up basic astronomical cycles and count used by the ancients. Tune in to the sky!
After 25 years of archaeological field experience, I decided to found the Museum of Prehispanic Astronomy as a way to share a special kind of knowledge related to the Mesoamerican cosmovision and its relation to the ancient calendar systems, natural and agricultural cycles, as well as the prehispanic architectonic design and iconography. The Museum is the result of my Phd degree and more than 10 years of astronomical research at Cañada de la Virgen Archaeological Site.

Where you'll be
Cañada de la Virgen Archaeological Site is one of the most enigmatic places I have had the opportunity to work at. There is a sense of secrecy in its location, a silent and yet powerful atmosphere that blows through the different temples. Since just a certain number of persons are aloud at the site every hour, one can truly submerge into the spiritual nature of the place. The Museum is just 3 km (2 miles) from the site's parking lot..
