Colonial Park Walking Tour

Savannah, United States

Experience hosted by Keith

What you'll do

We’ll start at the Patriot arch at the corner of the grounds where we’ll briefly get to know each other. Then we’ll stroll around to the original Lincoln gate where we’ll enter the cemetery.
Using a map, we’ll explore this colonial burying ground together. I’ll walk with you along the wall of orphan tombstones, explaining its significance and origin. I’ll tell you the history of Colonial Park Cemetery as we walk to important markers and I’ll relay known details on the people those stones commemorate. I’ll take you to the duelists’ grave and describe the duels in Savannah, pointing out those who died in this historically violent ritual. Hear about and see evidence of vandalism and fire damage and neglect. Desecrated graves, missing vaults, excavation projects, and so much more. We will discuss the decency of building a city atop the dead, and focus mostly on Savannah during the American Revolution.
Other things to note
This is NOT a ghost tour.
Also, while the cemetery isn’t very large, there is quite a lot to see. Please be ready to walk.

I’m Mr Bones! I'm a Savannah native. I have an uncontrollable love for everything macabre and eery. I'm passionate about living and making the most of my life while I'm alive. I've compiled for this tour a wealth of information on old burial customs, some interesting historical facts, and some puzzling things about this 300 year old cemetery.

Where you'll be

Colonial Park Cemetery is a 269 year old burial ground in the heart of historic downtown Savannah, Ga. It is only five acres in size, but holds thousands of Savannah’s oldest settlers. Every ghost tour makes a point to stop here and retell a few legends surrounding the area: this tour is your chance to get the historical fact that underlies those campfire stories. **A portion of the proceeds from this tour goes toward cemetery preservation.

Keith really knows his stuff and made sure we had an experience tailored to the needs of my family (particularly two cranky 7 year old, including one special needs). He was knowledgeable and charismatic, and after I mentioned my hearing loss made sure to speak with his face towards me- which really helped me keep up on what he was sharing. Though it wasn’t a traditional spooky tour because of the kids he did share some truly chilling history with us and made sure there were laughs. Extremely patient with the two kids who were over everything by the start of our 5 pm tour.

He did his research and knew a great deal about a really historic cemetery that predated our Revolutionary War. Amazing to see how this place showed the changes through the centuries. While a superficial walk through the place reveals only a relatively few graves, there were over 9000 people buried there.

Though you can walk through and read the signs posted all around the cemetery, Mr. Bones gives you an in depth story and reality of what's really lurking under the cemetery. He tells the story in a fascinating way and answered all of our weird questions. Definitely my favorite tour not only in Savannah, but probably overall. If you don't book a tour with him, you're really missing out.

Keith was informative, and had clearly studied the topic and the area. He was a good guide, personable, and I enjoyed the auxiliary materials he used to provide more information about the area. Overall, extremely well done.

This is a fantastic tour. Keith is very knowledgeable about the history of Savannah and the cemetery and those buried within. I learned a lot and really enjoyed myself.
