Barra de Potosí, MexicoPart of the Airbnb Animals collection

Animal experience hosted by Las Guias

  1. 3 hours
  2. Hosted in English and Spanish

What you'll do

We will meet by the taxi stand in front of the charming village of Barra de Potosí. We will walk to the beach and prepare you for your three-hour adventure on the water with a marine biologist and locally trained guide. Once you've had your safety briefing and know what to expect, we will hop into an 18-foot panga, and ride over the waves and into the sea. We will take our first measurements of the environment and listen for singing whales. From there, we will let the ocean and the whales and dolphins be our guides. With 12 species of dolphins and whales in our region, 4 species of sea turtles, and amazing ray, mobula and bird action, we are sure to have an interesting day together. And you will learn about how marine biologists work and a lot about whales!
Other things to note
Make sure you bring good sun protection - sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and something with sleeves to cover up. It gets hot out there! If you are prone to seasickness, take medication the night before

Where you'll be

We have been studying the whales and dolphins in this region since 2013. If there are whales nearby, we've got a good chance at finding them! We will almost certainly pass by the beautiful white rocks known as the Morros, see the coastline and golden sanded of Mexico from a boat - it's the best way to see the country, in our opinion!

We operate out of the village of Barra de Potosí, located 30 minutes from Zihuatanejo and 45 minutes from Ixtapa.

This experience is magical. Everyone who sees this adventure MUST do it. It's life changing to be among these beautiful creatures and learn what actual marine biologists do to learn, teach and preserve our planet.

We had an absolutely fantastic time. Raúl was an amazing guide and taught us quite a bit about the whales and ecosystem we were visiting. We saw whales almost immediately after taking off and just kept seeing them. One even breached TWO TIMES! It was unbelievable. We also saw a sea-turtle and a bunch of cool seabirds, like brown boobies. I cannot recommend this trip enough. We are grateful that we got to have such an intimate experience with these incredible animals. It was also great to learn about the conservation efforts being made and to watch Raúl conduct research in front of us. 5/5 stars!

This entire experience from start to finish was magical. My husband and I wanted to do some whale watching but because of Covid didn’t want to do a large group tour. I contacted them about doing some thing with just the two of us and they were very quick to respond and accommodate accordingly. We left from Barra de Potsoi which is in itself an amazing place and proceeded to spend several hours along the beautiful coast line seeing numerous whales. With Andrea as our accomplished and skilled biologist teaching us along the way, and our very capable captain getting us up close and personal, it was a truly memorable experience. Being able to listen to the whales sing was awe inspiring! This group is doing great work and whenever we come back to Ixtapa we will definitely spend time with them again!

Being with the whales is an amazing gift. The boats were respectful to the whales spaces and movements. Unfortunately the captain did not speak English and I feel I missed out on a lot of valuable information about the whales and the conservation actions.

Great morning on the water. Eric is a Phd candidate in marine biology, specializing in sea mammals. His wealth of information was boundless and very interesting. We didn't get to see any whales although we did hear them on his under water hydro-phone. We did see 2 species of dolphins, jumping mobius rays, loads of different sea birds, sea turtles and jumping swarms of tunas.
