What you'll do

Rediscover your five basic tastes while exploring Ithaca's restaurants on this special tour designed with winter weather in mind.

*Savor 5 generous tastings and 3 delicious drink pairings.

*Explore one of your five basic tastes (sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami) with each course.

*Redefine how you experience food as we discuss the hidden elements behind each taste.

*The tour route keeps the group warm with short walks from one establishment to the next!

The Science of Taste is a narrated, guided tour. You will visit five local establishments, exploring a different one of the five basic tastes through a satisfying tasting at each. We’ll discuss how we perceive these tastes, the ways in which they interact with each other, and the difference between taste and flavor. You’ll also learn how they’re used in cooking and you’ll find out whether or not you’re a super-taster!

Since grade school we've both had a love for food: Sarah taught herself to cook for a class project, and Seth dreamed of a build-your-own pasta bar biz. As adults we also fell in love with Ithaca: everything from the 'gorges' natural areas to the creative community. Today we curate and lead tours as Ithaca is Foodies. We draw on a combined 28 years of public speaking training, close relationships with our partner establishments, and our undying enthusiasm to bring you a culinary adventure accessible to locals and visitors alike. We cannot wait to bring you out with us!

The Ithaca Food Tour Science of Taste was a lot of fun--very well organized, interesting and tasty food items, good mix of restaurants, met some nice people, and Sarah was cheerful, enthusiastic, and knowledgable--I will definitely recommend it to others. It was a very enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Great experience. Sarah was very knowledgeable about tasting and the restaurants gave us dishes that they don’t usually serve. Made you feel like a VIP. Highly recommend!

I didn't realize before this trip Ithaca has a reputation for fine chefs and eateries. When I told friends I was doing this culinary tour I learned to expect it would be enjoyable. I was not disappointed. Sarah, who led this particular tour, is very knowledgeable on the topic of taste, and, yes, flavor. I met friendly people who lived nearby and some who came from a distance because of Ithaca’s ”foodie” reputation. I recommend this tour and I'll be back to explore more of Ithaca's treasures.

We had such a great time! Totally worth it. The food was fun and there was a complementary variety. The walk in between was refreshing not a burden at all. Definitely going to be getting more people to come
