What you'll do

The ancient Maya site of Muyil is located in the northern section of the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve. This millennia-old trading post, is the perfect place to enjoy an introduction to Mayan history, the ecology of the area and the objectives of the UNESCO´s Man and Biosphere Program (MAB).

Ancient temples surrounded by lush vegetation and a boardwalk through flooded jungle and eventually a lookout tower with a wonderful view of the biosphere, will give us the opportunity to learn about the incredible history of the Mayan civilization in the area. A delicious vegetarian picnic accompanied with seasonal fruits and local snacks awaits us at the end of the walk.

We then embark on a boat ride across two fresh water lagoons that mesmerize with their tones of green reflected in the still blue water. Once we reach the 'lazy river', we begin an adventure where we float for about 30 minutes in a truly unique setting, surrounded by the sounds of nature, orchids & bromeliads, hearing only the birdsong and the wind lightly rustling through the reeds. A calming experience like nothing you have experienced before.

In more than 15 years of working as a guide, the Yucatan Peninsula has been a great school for me. I am fascinated by science and the research that contributes to a better understanding of life to help us live better. The contact with the nature, people and history of the area has led me to discover and understand how important it is for me to lead a life that is attached to the truth through the study and understanding of the experience of man on the planet, always taking nature as a model and inspiration. I consider myself very passionate about life. I find great joy sharing what I have learnt during my time here. Nowdays I work in a responsible travel agency with other guides (which you will meet if I am not your guide) with the same passion and interest for conservation and sharing with the traveler what this area has to offer.

This was the most memorable and amazing experience that we had during our trip. Every day in Mexico was amazing, but the day we spent with Miguel was so well planned and thought-provoking. We learned so much about Muyil and the Sian Ka’an biosphere. Miguel and Mexico Kan eco tours are great stewards of the environment. This tour was set up so we could enjoy the beauty and heritage of the area without leaving a trace. The float through the turquoise water laced with mangroves was breathtaking. Lunchtime with our driver Charlie and Miguel was filled with laughs and great food from a local restaurant.

This was a lovely tour! We didnt actually meet Miguel in person, but another absolutely lovely guide who shared a true passion for Sian Ka'an and the Muyil culture. We learnt a lot about the ruins, nature and culture of the area. (Be sure to bring lots of natural mozzie repellant or wear long loose fitting clothing as you will be in a humid jungle, and there will be many mozzies.) The climb up the tower was a little scary (I'm a little scared of heights), but so worth braving your fears for the view. Our float through the canals was so relaxing, I could have gone for another round. And the lunch at the end was yummy. Thank you for a great experience!

This experience just topped my previous favoritepart of the trip. I love that we learned about Mayan history, the nature walk and the lazy river. Our hosts, Mary and Marco, and our driver, Javier, were so friendly and personable. And I loved that there were homemade vegetarian snacks and food. That is hard to find when traveling. I highly, highly recommend checking out.
