About your host, Andiswa Madikane &
I am a three-time boxing champion, mother of two, and staunch advocate in the fight against gender-based violence in Khayelitsha, South Africa. When I was growing up I did not have a big sister, so I want to be that big sister now and give young women strength. I want people from around the world to know more about what we do at Boxgirls and about women leaders in Khayelitsha.
What we’ll do
We'll start at the new Harare Public Library and walk to the Boxgirls office, where you'll see how our work empowers girls through after-school sport and leadership training. Then we'll head to the local gym on foot. Along the way, we'll explore the surrounding area to see our neighbors and learn about other projects that incorporate sports for social change. Bring sports clothes, a camera, and a towel. You'll be hosted by myself and/or Nwabisa Qalanto, another member of Boxgirls.
Where we’ll be
Khayelitsha means “new home” in the Xhosa language. Located in southeast Cape Town, it's a community with resilience and strong bonds, despite its poverty.
