What you'll do
In this comprehensive three hour lesson, you'll learn how to make your kayak go where you want it to go, what to look for when kayak shopping, what essential gear to buy and not buy, Universal River Signals, river etiquette and paddler lingo. You'll try out a variety of kayaks during the lesson (I've got 20!) to find out exactly what kayak fits you best. Lessons are limited to five students allowing plenty of one-on-one instruction. I also earned an American Canoe Association endorsement to teach Adaptive Kayaking to help paddlers with special needs or physical limitations.
I was instrumental in bringing recreational kayaking after I moved from Florida to Nashville in 2007. I became an American Canoe Association Certified Kayak Instructor in 2008 and since then I've instructed 1,300 new paddlers ages 8-72. I wrote the book, "Quiet Water Kayaking - A Beginner's Guide," based on my lessons, available on Amazon. I call kayaking the great equalizer - regardless of your age, race or sex, anyone can participate. It's also one of the few sports that, all at the same time, you exercise, socialize, de-stress and enjoy nature.

Where you'll be
I live on private waterfront property on Bledsoe Creek. You'll learn how to kayak in the beautiful surroundings of a quiet cove with no distractions, traffic or noise. Because I live where I teach, you benefit from the availability of twenty kayaks from which to choose during the lesson. Feel free after the lesson to try out any other kayaks.

Everyone's scared of flipping. While it does happen, after the lesson you'll be prepared for it. Nonswimmers, welcome! You don't have to be in tiptop shape to learn how to kayak.
