What you'll do

After a one and a half hours ride from Vienna, we reach the base camp of the nature park. We pay a small entry fee and start our hike. The first part of the trail is leading mostly downhill, passing by several waterfalls. Depending on season and weather conditions, they may carry more or less water. In spring there are many alpine wildflowers to admire. Most of them are rare and protected.

The rest of the path follows the river quite evenly on narrow wooden bars. Along the way, we find many stony and sandy beaches, perfect for a swim or a lunch break in the middle of nature. 1,5 hours later we reach the mountain hut, selling snacks such as sausages, sandwiches, beer and coffee.

After visiting the last waterfall we make our way back through a pleasant shady forest road. We take a scenic train to reach our starting point at the base camp (10-minute ride), before heading back to Vienna.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an alpine trail. You must be used to hiking alpine trails (rocky, stony, rooted terrain) and to steep ascents and descents. You should have a good fitness level to master this hike. If this does not apply to you, I strongly recommend choosing one of my other tour options.

*The entry fee of EUR 6,-- is extra and has to be paid directly at the base camp.

MEETING POINT is easily reachable by Vienna subway U4 (15-min ride from city centre Opera/Karlsplatz).

Hi, I'm Karin. I'm the founder of Das Leben Spüren - Embrace Life, an outdoor activity organiser, offering guided hiking tours and excursions for travellers, expats and locals. Already before that, I voluntarily organised similar trips for a global expat network. I am a professional hiking guide and have a master in tourism & leisure management. I love meeting people from all over the world as much as I love nature. Combining both and showing travellers the natural beauties of my home country is what I enjoy most. Besides my passion for nature and exploring new trails, I love yoga, photography, gardening, fashion and delicious food. On my tours, I invite participants to be present at the moment by finding joy and contentment in the sheer beauty of nature, rather than boring them with facts and figures.

Where you'll be

This trip leads us to the stunningly beautiful Ötschergräben, also called the “Grand Canyon of Austria”. The river water dazzles and sparkles in all shades of green and the mountain scenery is just breathtaking. Not to mention the many waterfalls along the way. The best: it is possible to plunge into the river! The most formative element of the landscape is the Ötscher mountain with a height of 1.900 meters (6.200 ft).

Great experience and beautiful canyon. We booked it on a public holiday so it was much more crowded than normal. Reccomend you go on a weekday (that is not a holiday). Area is quite difficult to get to without a car! Karin is a knowledgeable and welcoming host. We hope she expands her business!

Hiking with Karin was the best decision I could ever have taken when travelling to Vienna. It is an experience I will always remember, wonderful nature guided by the graceful and knowledgeable Karin. Stunning sights and swimming in the river were even more appreciated with the sensitive eyes and words from Karin.

While the trail was beautiful, the trip was overpriced for a trail that you could do yourself. The trip wasn’t worth the price and along with paying $175 we also had to pay for a train ticket/entry 6€ and provide our own snacks. Ultimately, I value experience over money so the cost at the end of the day, wasn’t too important to me. The views were amazing and the hike was a nice escape from the city. The thing that made my perception of the trip/host change was some rude remarks made during the trip (not towards the group but towards other foreign hikers). However, she was professional, friendly and talkative towards the group.

Let me say that I thought I was too ambitious for booking this. I'm not extremely fit or athletic but I do enjoy the outdoors. A few days before the hike I sprained my ankle and was concerned I wouldnt be able to do the hike. Karin was accommodating since no refund was possible and she took breaks as needed. The hike was BEAUTIFUL, every section of the 8 miles (12KM) looked like the photos in terms of how incredible they were. The only part of the hike I would consider grueling was the hike out of the canyon which was about 30 minutes of a steep uphill ascent but it was worth it for the views. Highly recommend Karin and this experience.

It really worth it. You just have to be physically fit, no breathing problems. You should also wear a good hiking shoes. I would go for it again... Totally recomended
