What you'll do

After meeting in a central location, we'll start walking around my hometown of Ghent, but instead of visiting the main tourist attractions, we'll go 'beyond' the usual tourist itinerary. We will instead see several hidden gems that are just as interesting and beautiful but are often unknown to the majority of tourists. There will be plenty of history from the Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution but also present-day Ghent, a lively, innovative and progressive city which is often described as Europe's best kept secret.

We'll for instance see a typical Flemish beguinage (my favourite place in the city, and you'll love it too!) or an abbey's vineyard hidden in the city but also the hypermodern city library. Besides the history and background of the places, I will also talk about interesting facts of local life and culture in Ghent and Belgium as well as the complicated Belgian political and socio-economic context (if you're interested of course).

If you have any requests or preferences, the tour is adaptable and I'm flexible to also show you some of the highlights. Of course, I'll also give you some tips for restaurants, bars or what to do next.
Other things to note
I can adjust the starting time, duration and if you tell me your interests (for instance you're really interested in the World Wars or you're really into chocolate) I can adjust and customize.

I was born and raised in the Ghent area but I've lived in many countries to study and work (including Australia, US, Peru and Spain). I have a PhD in political and social studies with a focus on human and cultural rights and I've worked in Peru and the US on ethical or responsible tourism. I'm intrigued by local cultures, diversity and socio-economic and political background of places I live in and visit and I'm a strong believer in the potential of sustainable and responsible tourism, issues I have worked on as a student and as a professional.

Where you'll be

We will start our walk with several interesting places and hidden gems in the historic center of Ghent before moving on to first the southern district of central Ghent, where not tourists but locals and students are in the majority. We'll then pass through the district just east of the historic center to finally end the walk back where we started. We do cover quite some distance walking, so wear your walking shoes (also for the cobble stones)!

Natalie was fantastic! This experience was definitely worth every euro. We got off the beaten path of the main tourist sights and learned a lot about how the city has changed over time. She showed us places we wouldn’t have found on our own and we got to know the city’s culture a bit better. We highly recommend this experience!

I had a great tour with Natalie. She showed me some neat places of Ghent’s history that are away from the historical center. She tailored the walk to my interests, and we had lovely conversation along the way.

Super rencontre.
