In 2006, in an agricultural community in Northern Vermont, I developed, implemented and evaluated a sustainability curriculum & school garden for my Masters degree from UVM. In 2008, I helped Thomas and Constance Broz found Farm Discovery at Live Earth to empower youth and families to regenerate healthy food, farming, social and natural systems starting with the basics, food on the farm.

About the organization: Farm Discovery at Live Earth

Farm Discovery at Live Earth is a nonprofit organization working in the Pajaro Valley community to empower youth and families (to take action) to build and sustain healthy food, farming, social and natural systems. Our home, Live Earth Farm, is a 150 acre patchwork of working organic farm, riparian corridor, oak and redwood forest in the Pajaro Valley of Santa Cruz County, California.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Farm Discovery at Live Earth.

Where you'll be

You will be visiting a working organic family-farm overlooking the Pajaro Valley. We grow 50 different fruits and vegetables for a CSA and farmers markets in a patchwork of cultivated and wild spaces. We have pygmy milking goats, laying hens, a pregnant Jersey cow and ponies.

What a wonderful experience! My mother-in-law, two friends and myself attended this cooking class with Chef Diego and hosted by Simone. It was fabulous, from the techniques and recipes we learned, to the food that we prepared to the people we met! We started cooking outside in the cob oven and later moved inside to their kitchen. The food was fresh, healthy and from the farm. We also cooked a whole cod encrusted in salt in the cob oven, delicious! I had attended another event with Chef Diego which was great and had been curious about the programs at Live Earth and Farm Discovery, so it was the perfect opportunity. I'm definitely looking forward to another event!

This event was a unique and thoroughly enjoyable cooking/eating experience. The staff was warm and friendly. The chef was not only an amazing cook but was both entertaining and educational. We experienced very different foods, either in content or cooking method, or both. All were delicious and shared with friends as well as strangers who became friends by the end of the evening. I have recommended the experience to many and will continue to do so. I look forward to the next event.

This experience was a relaxed, informative afternoon with an expert on combining foraging with serving delightful foods that have a story and a history. Emily “knows her stuff”! She can talk about the origins, cultural history, and health benefits of the foods we prepared. She is a chef, anthropologist, and storyteller rolled into one.

It was a really fun experience! Loved meeting new people and learning how to cook dishes I would never have cooked before. the hosts were super friendly and knowledgable. Plus your money is going towards a good cause. Would definitely recommend trying it!

I can't wait to go back, and bring more friends! Great dose of farm and local industry education, tasty snacks, a wonderful picnic, and plenty of veggies to take home at the end of the day. We were lucky to have perfect weather and both left feeling incredibly relaxed and completely content.

This was a truly great day. I planned this is a belated Valentines day gift for my boyfriend since we prefer to spend time together and he is into the outdoors. Not only was our Host warm and friendly, but the farm was beautiful, and we got to pick our own veggies. We ended up leaving with enough vegetables to feed us for a full week for free as part of the experience, which was great since I originally though the experience was a little pricey but I would happily go again. The picnic at the end was also magnificent.
