Project Esperanza is a non profit organization that primarily serves the Haitian immigrant community here in Puerto Plata. We have been here for over 10 years and have a variety of projects to help give back to the community. One of our favorite projects is our Art Shop located in downtown Puerto Plata! Here we sell a variety of souvenirs hand made by local artists, with all proceeds going back into the community.

About the organization: Project Esperanza

Our organization primarily (but by no means exclusively) serves the Haitian immigrant community in the forms of education and community development projects. We currently have two grass roots schools that are supporting over 200 students. We also have two Art Shops as well as a Boy's Home, along with a variety of other projects. You can find more information at our website, esperanzameanshope.org!

Hi, I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with Caitlin, her family, and excellent chef! It was fun making the sweet Haitian treats. Plus, I learned about the Esperanza organization helping to teach elementary school for these kids, of which they could use more volunteers! What a great way to support a noble cause and enjoy a delicious treat at the same time. Highly recommend.

Great experience. We had so many treats left over that the kids had to help me eat them. I suggest bringing something for the kids or the organization that would be helpful to them. A bit hard to find as I drove myself to the location. But the host was helpful and I eventually found it. The location is on a farm in the mountains. Lots of animals and land. The kids were nice and gave me a tour of the grounds before we started making the treats. This was a good way to contribute a service during a trip to puerto plata. I’d do it again. Great value.

My husband and I had a great time making sik sou bon bon. Our instructor was kind and an expert at making these. They taste amazing and they gave us plenty to take with us (3 baggies full). They had offered to pick us up but we had a car so we drove, Sybil gave us exact instructions and we didn’t have trouble finding it. Just before you get to the farm the road is too rocky for a low car so we just parked it and had a nice little walk. Sybil was really warm and friendly, she told us about the organization where this cooking lesson took place. It’s called Esperanza and they help Haitian refugees. She also gave us some good recommendations for beaches and restaurants. It was a great experience, I definitely recommend it!
