What you'll do

I’ll have a short introduction get-together, then walk around my 2 acre property for 15-20 minutes to observe & talk about the many different native plants growing here. Then, we’ll sit for 10-15 minutes to have a lesson in the history & use of natural/plant dyes; showing examples from my previous work.

Depending on the time of year & what is ready to be used to make dyes, we’ll then selectivly harvest the same plants that we’ll dye from that class (those will be used by my next class as I will have already prepped the dyes for the present class). This will take up to 30 minutes.

Returning to my shady outdoor dye lab (it can get quite hot here), I’ll demonstrate 3 different dyeing techniques: tie-dye, straight dip & color blending which will take 15 minutes. Then, each student will spend 25-30 minutes dyeing a sample/prototype yard of 8 mm habatoi silk, followed by quietly dyeing a hand-rolled hemmed large 8 mm habatoi silk scarf; both of which are theirs to keep.

The silk scarves dry within 5 minutes in our dry heat. Just in time to wrap up & say goodbye to each other.

These activities alternate between active & passive & keep the participants engaged for the full 2 hours.

I was a teacher of handwork/textile arts (weaving, dyeing, felting, knitting, embroidery, spinning, sewing, bookbinding) at two Waldorf schools for 25 years; when I “retired” to Moab & bought my beautiful childhood home in 2007, I began teaching small group classes of textile arts. I have taught predominately children & teens, but many classes have also included parents &/or grandparents. Because the high desert where I live grows unique plants for natural dyes & my big garden gifts me with so many colors through the plant world, I have had abundent success teaching natural dye classes.

Where you'll be

The entire class takes place in my 2 acre garden/property here on the outskirts of Moab, UT. There is a variety of terrain here, with easily discerned & wide paths to all areas we’ll walk to. I also have parking for up to 7 cars in my yard; I plan to limit classes to 5 students.

Mary was very welcoming and a true artist! She’s a wealth of knowledge and was happy to share information and stories. She allowed me to work alone at my own speed but was there for guidance. She dyed material with me, so I felt like we were working together rather than she was watching me (which makes me feel rushed) and I really appreciated that. Her property is beautiful and she knows all about the plants she uses to dye. My finished pieces are beautiful and I had a very enjoyable time! Highly recommended even as a solo as opposed to a group if you find yourself with time to kill alone (my group we’re all out bike riding). Oh, also, Mary booked my appointment last minute for me on my schedule which was very nice!!!

Really enjoyed the tour through the property to observe native trees and plants. Dye process was a lot of fun. Loved the end result of the scarves and t-shirt. Mary was a great teacher and really went the extra mile.

Native plant dyeing with Mary was AMAZING! We didn't know what to expect but wanted something artsy mixed in with all the outdoor physical activity of Moab. Couldn't have been more sweet, educational and fun. Mary is clearly a retired teacher who truly cares about sharing her passions with others. So enjoyable!

What a wonderful experience Mary created for me with her guidance on natural dyeing! First of all, it was a very cold damp afternoon which is likely why I was treated to a solo experience—lucky me! I am grateful that Mary didn’t cancel. She kindly had a cup of hot tea awaiting me and we toured her lovely property to see the various trees from which she harvests bark and leaves, etc. for her dyeing projects. I liked Mary’s casual style of teaching. She showed me various samples of her beautiful projects, yet wasted no time—we were busy dyeing silk before you knew it! She had 4 beautiful plant dyes this day that produced gorgeous red, yellows, orange, and brown. To my surprise, my scarves turned out beautifully!!! What was really nice about this experience was Mary’s guidance which was readily available, yet she invited me to just play with different knots and color combinations, etc. This made it a very relaxing and meditative experience and introduction to natural dyeing!!! Oh, no! Now another craft calls to me.... lol! Highly recommend this experience, so don’t hesitate to add this to your list of fun things to do in Moab. And you might consider her lodging—it seems like it would be a lovely place to stay! Thank you so much, Mary—I consider this to be one of the highlights of my long winter getaway! Blessings to you.

Learning about natural dyeing with Mary was the highlight of my visit to Moab. Walking around her property and seeing which colors could be had from seemingly ordinary plants was fascinating. As a former Waldorf teacher Mary knows just how to craft a meaningful learning experience that inspires true creativity.

This native plant dyeing experience was very fun and interesting! It exceeded all my expectations. Mary is a very skilled and knowledgeable teacher. She welcomed us warmly and made us feel relaxed and right at home. My daughter and I had a wonderful time learning about the natural dyes that can be made from the many plants and trees around Mary’s lovely home, then dyeing our own beautiful scarves in the vibrant colors. Time seemed to stand still as we were absorbed in the experience of learning a new craft and amazed by what we were able to create. This was the highlight of our trip to Moab, and we’re eagerly looking forward to returning in the fall to visit Mary again and to see what beautiful colors her plants and trees will provide for another fun and creative experience.
