What you'll do

Catch the making of gospel in the heart of Harlem

We’ll be in a historic brownstone on one of the most coveted blocks in Harlem, where we’ll begin by socializing over wine and refreshments. We'll chat about the history and art of gospel music and why its so important to Harlem. Following drinks in the lounge, walk downstairs to the performance floor for a rare peek into the award-winning choir's rehearsal where guests are encouraged to cheer and sing along before enjoying a jubilant mini-concert. Afterward, we'll send you off to spread the joy of gospel music with the rest of New York City.

I am the founder of the Mama Foundation for the Arts and co-writer of the 1983 musical Mama, I Want to Sing! Music is, and always has been, my life. Growing up surrounded by the gospel, jazz, and rhythm of Harlem, it became my greatest joy to share the invigorating sounds of our history.

Simply an amazing experience. We totally did not expect to enjoy this particular experience so much, but it felt very real, like getting a behind-the-scenes look at what the choir does for its members and the community at large. Would definitely recommend. There were a couple of times when we were on the verge of tears because we were so moved.

Vy is a very nice and hospitable host. She invited us upstairs of her beautiful house and talked about the story of her family and the history of gospel. Then she led us downstairs to watch the rehearsal of a group of very talented teenage singers. They learnt by ear without sheet music, and the way they improvised and adjusted to each other was amazing to watch. The pianist and the leader of the group were very experienced and professional, simply amazing. It was a very fulfilling night of music.

Wonderful, uplifting and interesting experience. Vy gave us a little of her and her family's story and then we had the chance to sit through the Friday night session with the teens. Beautiful.

Vy and her youth gospel choir was hands down the best of our experiences in NYC. This group of exceptional singers and the energy of these wonderful teens was uplifting and inspirational. They are truly extraordinary as is Vy. We were touched by their thoughtfulness and so very happy we chose this experience. It does not disappoint. The home, which has belonged to Vy's family (aka Mama) for over 100 years is in a very energetic part of Harlem. I strongly recommend to anyone who wants to experience this historic area on a more personal level. Five stars without hesitation. Thank you, Vy and thanks to those wonderful kids under your charge.
