What you'll do

Let's explore South Mountain Preserve and discover Hidden Valley. We'll hike about 2-3 hours, travel a total of 3.8 miles, and gain 1,000 feet of elevation to discover a magical spot in the middle of the mountain.

Our adventure begins with a climb but offers amazing views right away. As we continue to gain elevation we’ll see local landmarks like Four Peaks, Camelback Mountain, Piestewa Peak, and Downtown Phoenix.

Surrounded by fantastic rock formations as we climb even higher, we’ll stop to learn about the Sonoran Desert’s unique geological history, vegetation, and wildlife. We'll see Saguaros, wild flowers, Barrel and Prickly Pear cacti. We may even spot a family of Quails, a Zebra Tailed Lizard, or Jack Rabbits running across the trail.

After we’ve reached our highest elevation we’ll squeeze through Fat Man’s Pass (a narrow pass through a giant boulder created by a powerful wash) and descend into Hidden Valley. Here we will be completely secluded from city views and surrounded by birds, butterflies, and fresh herbal air. We’ll take a moment here to enjoy in the beauty of the desert.

We'll stop again to examine ancient petro glyph sites created by the Hohokom, sometime between 350 - 1500 AD. Next, we’ll rock scramble a bit before we hike to a natural rock tunnel. Finally, we’ll enjoy more views of the valley on the way down the mountain.

Janelle was an amazing guide. She took the time to explain the various plants and animals we saw on the hike as well as told us more about the Phoenix area and the hiking scene there!

Janelle was an amazing guide! This is my first time in Arizona so I had planned this hike to do with my family for my birthday. The hike was everything I wanted and more! Janelle took the time to explain fun facts about history, culture, plants, animals, and views along the way. She has incredible knowledge and experiences that she shared with us as well. Not all of us were at the same hiking skill level, but Janelle made sure that no one missed a beat or felt pressured to move at a certain pace. The hike was about 3 hours, as stated in the description, which was the perfect amount of time. She also gave us recommendations of other mountains and trails to explore. Would highly recommend!!!

I loved the Hidden Valley trail. Janelle was great. We kept a relatively fast pace but she was able to slow down the pace when necessary. We stopped to take pictures when it was requested, we learned about the the saguaro cacti, barrel cacti, the Palo verde, and many other plants and animals. Janelle was able to spot lizards for us to take notice to and she made sure to warn the rattlesnakes that were possibly hidden when necessary so that would not have any encounters with them (that was a big plus). Overall, I would do this hike again with Janelle. The views were beautiful. We also got to learn a little bit about the Hohokam culture.

I was in Phoenix for just 1.5 days and am so glad I was able to go on Janelle's "Conquer the Trail to Hidden Valley" Hike. Lucky for me I was the only hiker with her. Her pace was quicker than is usual for me though she made sure I was up for the challenge and had stops along the way. Janelle is passionate about hiking and the great outdoors and knows her stuff. I enjoyed hearing about her interesting background as well as her sense of humor. I suspect you can't go wrong in choosing ANY of Janelle's hikes! (Thanks, Janelle, for suggesting Saguaro Lake. It's beautiful!)

I was in Phoenix on a business trip and wanted the opportunity to get out into the mountains. I didn't have time to research hiking trails on my own and wasn't familiar with the area. Janelle's experience was perfect. She was very personable and knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, the geology, and the history of the area. I plan to reach out to her to book another trip the next time in Phoenix and strongly recommend this for anyone visiting Phoenix who wants to experience the beautiful surrounding nature, get some exercise, and have a truly local experience. For those who live in Phoenix - if you've never seen the view of Phoenix from the surrounding mountains sign up now to do this - you don't know what you've been missing! Thanks to Janelle I had the perfect day in Phoenix. Do read Janelle's recommendations when you book - wear sensible shoes and bring water and sunscreen.
