During his 27 years in apartheid prisons, Nelson Mandela formed close relationships not only with his fellow prisoners, but also with those tasked with keeping him behind bars. I'm one of them.

Our tour with Jack was awesome. Due to ferry schedules, we reversed his normal order and started at the house where Mandela was imprisoned for the last 14 months before his release. Jack spent those 14 months with Mandela daily and had stories for each of the rooms. It really brought the time, the change, and the excitement to life. We got to sit where Mandela mapped out the New South Africa with his closest advisors. We got to walk his walk to freedom. It was a great experience. Unfortunately, the ferry we were supposed to take to Robben Island was cancelled, so we were unable to make it to the island. However, the real magic in this tour is the house and Jack's stories there. We would highly recommend this tour!

Unfortunately, stormy weather canceled the trip to Robben Island but Jack still took us out to the home where Mandela spent the last 14 months of his house arrest. It was an incredible experience! Jack and Mandela formed an unlikely but special bond. His stories of cooking for Mandela are extraordinary- they felt like little gifts and rare insights into one of the worlds most important leaders. This is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Do it if you can!

UNFORGETTABLE!!! What an absolutely mind blowing experience spending time with a lovely man who had the pleasure of forming a special relationship with the legend that is Mandela. Spending time in the location where a prisoner became a president and where the new South Africa was born whilst receiving insight into the man who made it all happen. This was an incredibly rewarding experience which I will never forget!! I highly recommend this tour! Jack and his team were very attentive to my needs and I had an absolutely amazing day spending time with them!! Thank you so much!!

Well I didnt actually get to go on either tour with Jack. Robben Island closed due to COVID on the morning of our scheduled tour. Jack still met with me that morning and explained the situation. It was appreciated. My refund was promptly processed unlike another experience that I had scheduled the same week. I plan to go back again next year and try it all again. See you next year Jack?

Jack had a great story for every question we asked about Mr. Mandela. Getting to hear a first hand account of his final days in prison was unforgettable, especially the insights of how he kept his sense of humor. Both Jack and his driver were very nice and accommodating, we would highly recommend.

This was a truly unique experience. You can of course visit Robben Island on your own, but hearing Jack's stories of what it was like for him adds a whole other perspective. The visit to the house at the former Victor Verster Prison is something else altogether, and is really what sets this experience apart (you can book the house visit separately as well). Seeing the house where Nelson Mandela spent the last 14 months of his imprisonment and especially hearing Jack's stories who cooked for him during this time was fascinating. You'll hear stories you won't find anywhere else. The house itself is not open to the public, so it's a real privilege to be able to visit.
