What you'll do
This guided sketch walk focuses on the design and ornamentation of architect Louis H. Sullivan, Chicago's "father of skyscrapers." The buildings and fragments we'll visit provide an opportunity to take a closer look at Sullivan's ornamental designs that combine the organic and the geometric. Architecture history will add context and background while we're filling our sketchbooks with Sullivan's incredible, and almost forgotten, architecture. I will provide a small drawing kit containing a sketchbook, pencil, and eraser—but it's okay if you want to bring your own favorite sketchbook or tablet. This experience includes admission to the Art Institute of Chicago. Please advise me beforehand if you are a member. Afterwards, we'll share our sketches over refreshments.
Other things to note
If you're interested in the rise of late 19th century skyscrapers and how this impacted Chicago's explosive growth, then this walking tour is for you.
