What you'll do

"According to the ceremony, on the 20th of July celebrating the memory of Prophet Elijah, the faithful ascend the mount Hymmetus from an alley that leads to the chapel to light a candle and honor it. Indeed, the mountain is illuminated by lights that light up especially for these days"

You are invited to a combination of natural & spiritual experience, following this ceremonial on the footprints of the pilgrims:

Pick up from Eliniko metro station by car. Short drive to the starting point

Sunset hike at the south of Hymmetus mountain offering breathtaking 360o view to Saronic gulf's islands. We follow a steep rocky path, signed with red crosses, known only to locals. Recognize characteristic red limestones, wild olive trees, colorful flowers (seasonally) and local herbs ~40min

Stop at Prophet Elias chapel and ring the big bell! Observe the tiny inside, decorated by plenty of saint's paints offered by pilgrims and light up a candle.

Grab the perfect seat on the rocks and share to stories from the surrounded area. Use your free time to relax, meditate, or just admire the natural palette of colors and smells.

Watch the moment the sun sets all around you and Athens turns into a spectacular night vista of sparkling lights. Use your camera or phone to take photos!

Hike down with flashlights surrounded by city lights!

Drop off same metro station

Where you'll be

The south part of mount Hymmettus is primary rocky and wild. The name comes from the pre-Hellenic which meant a tough, rocky place. It's a rich ecosystem with more than 600 species of plants (wild olives) and several species of birds & mammals.

The terrain of that specific part of mountain looks strongly as a Cycladic island, having a majestic 360o panoramic open view to the Saronic gulf, the Sounio peninsula and the first islands (Aegina)

This was an amazing hike. Gorgeous views. Do be honest with yourself about your fitness level before you book, the first part is very steep. After that it is amazing but that first part nearly did me in lol Fotis was very kind and gave ample opportunity for me to rest and go at my own pace.

The views from the top were incredibly beautiful at sunset. This location is very unique and would not be easily accessed/found on your own. I would most definitely hike with Fotis again!

Once in a lifetime experience in a location that you would never find alone. Speculation view and Fotis is a knowledgeable gem that made the experience enjoyable. I was skeptical about Greece and this hike made me fall in love with it! We were lucky to have an amazing sunset and looked around inside the chapel to end. The hike was challenging enough to still be enjoyable but a great way to stay active whilst on holiday. Highly recommend for anyone wanting an active outdoors experience in Athens. Great pics from the top. Thank you Fotis!

I loved this experience! The hike was a little challenging for me since I don’t hike often, however it’s not really difficult but the steepness of the first part of the hike left me out of breath and have to slowdown a few times, but once we got to the second half it was really easy. The final destination was well worth it! The views are incredible beautiful! And the little Chapel beyond charming. We got to hear a little about the chapel history and customs of the local people. Fotis was encouraging and cheering us along the way and seemed to be very knowledgeable. One piece of advice tho, you definitely need adequate footwear for this hike, either a real hiking booth or sneakers with the best traction you can find. The route is very steep and with small loose rocks that makes it slippery, and the big rocks are very smooth, which makes the path also very slippery. Bring your own very bright flashlight for the way back, since even though it wasn’t really dark, the low light made difficult to distinguish the area of loose rocks on the path. If you come prepared you will enjoy a once in a lifetime experience!! 100% recommended!!
