What you'll do

Learn about San Francisco’s Chinatown through its famous cuisine and cultures.

I’ll give you an overview of the city’s rich Chinese history and the unique cultures. We’ll head to one of my favorite destinations, a factory where you can make your own fortune cookies. And as we wander through lively streets and grocery store aisles, we’ll discuss the produce and ingredients most sought after for Chinese cuisine.

Optionally, we can go to one of my favorite dim sum houses (cost about $18 per person separately). You’ll leave with a better understanding of the people and flavors that make up this iconic neighborhood, the oldest Chinatown in the U.S. and the biggest Chinese enclave outside of China.

I’m from Taishan, China, where more than half of the early Chinese immigrants to the U.S. came from. My great grandfathers were among the immigrants that contributed to the development of gold mines, railroads, and businesses in the SF bay area. I’m excited to share my culinary and sociological perspective on Chinatown with you. I also speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Taishanese, & Japanese.

Where you'll be

Starting at Portsmouth Square, we’ll walk the unique streets of North America’s oldest Chinese enclave. We'll visit a three-generation fortunate cookie factory, explore unique produces, and visit other local landmarks. Finally, we will try out of my favorite Chinese restaurants.

Carolyn is a very engaging tour guide and eager to please, but the sights she pointed out to us were limited. I think there is probably a lot more that could be added for an engaging walk through Chinatown.

Pianpian was an amazing host and gave such an interesting and detailed history of Chinatown. She's extremely knowledgable of the area and of Chinese American history. The fortune cookie factory was fun and the dim sum was great! Pianpian was also such a kind and friendly person. She's extremely approachable and is someone you'd want to hang out with as friends! I would recommend this experience to all my family and friends!

I would not recommend this tour. It wasn't like its description. Very little information and we did not get dim sum or go into the fortune cookie factory. Tour guide was not prepared at all. To the point that the restaurant was closed. We wandered until we found one that was available. It ended up not what we had in mind. It was a waste of time and money compare to other walks I have been on.

Full disclosure: I'm an Airbnb employee. I (and my friend from out of town) really enjoyed this tour of Chinatown. It was nice to have someone with roots and understanding of the community in SF show us around and explain all the intricacies and details we never would have thought to ask about. Our host was also just an agreeable and thoughtful person - even when we weren't talking about Chinatown, it was a blast.

I learned a lot about China Town from PianPian. I loved the trip to the store with all the paper clothes and how enlightening it was having her explain what all the Chinese characters meant. Also, dinner was delicious, and I'm a vegetarian!
