Aesthetic Setagaya with a Local

Setagaya, Japan

Experience hosted by Ai

  1. 2.5 hours
  2. Hosted in English and Japanese

What you'll do

Take a relaxing urban walk to Sangenjaya station, and find your own hidden gems along the Setagaya Line; one of a few existing trams in Tokyo. You will realize that how much the locals are proud of their small cozy town with quiet yet lovely, peaceful atmosphere.

The spots we visit are;
1. Yamashita Shotengai (local shopping street)
- pass along the narrow shopping street while filling your mouth with some snacks; I recommend you to try roasted sweet potatoes!

2. Setagaya Hachimangu Shrine
- a shrine which has a sumo wrestling ring

3. Old Tram Car Monument

4. Gotokuji Temple
- a temple famous for having uncountable beckoning cat statues! You can buy and put your own cats on the shelf, so that your wishes will come true.

5. Shoinjinja Shrine
- a shrine dedicated to a samurai, Yoshida Shoin. He devoted himself to educate the youth by establishing a private school!

5. Local cafe
- as a coffee lover, I can take you to one of my favorite cafes, which serves very good coffee! Let’s have a chat and you will be a true local :)

6. Carrot Tower
Once the cute colorful tram arrives at Sangenjaya, let's go to the symbol of the town; the Carrot Tower. It has an amazing free observatory on the 26th floor, my favorite secret place.
If we are lucky, we might be able to see the Mt. Fuji! Well if not, relish in the picturesque scenery of Tokyo while gazing at the gorgeous setting sun.
Other things to note
Highly recommended for those who prefer peaceful & quiet places. The length of this tour depends on how long we spend at a cafe; it might take longer than three hours

"Tokyo Hidden Gems", a community I established has now 440 members.
I have been fortunate enough to have opportunities to visit 33 out of 47 prefectures in Japan since I was a child, thanks to my parents who are passionate travelers, which has raised my interests in traveling and let me work in the tourism industry after graduation.
I have experiences of working at a stylish hostel, and at the largest travel agency in Japan.

Where you'll be

Let's meet up at Gotokuji station and explore the hidden gems around; shrines, a temple, and Setagaya Castle park. On our way, we can stop by a cafe if you'd like - I would say I'm a coffee-addict and love to spend my time in a local & quiet cafe, so I'll take you to my favorite one! We'll split up after we get to the top of Carrot Tower, lovely orange tower.

This Setagaya tour includes a few shrines and temples, a tram ride, and a coffee shop. I recommend this tour if you want to experience suburban Tokyo atmosphere away from the bustling scenes in Shinjuku and Akihabara. One of the shrines is where the beckoning cat originated. It was the first time I rode on a tram. It was a different experience from the subway rides in Tokyo. At the end of the tour, we went to a nice coffee shop. The tour guide was polite and knowledgeable on the history.

This is the best tour I have ever had! Ai is super friendly, thoughtful, professional and knowledgeable. She has planned everything to the best and we don’t need to worry about anything. The locations she took us to are all very local and authentic, we would not find those places by ourselves. And she has explained everything clearly. We have been in Japan quite a few times, but we have learned so many new things from this tour. The tour is definitely worth it and I highly recommend it to everyone.

The tour was well organized and included many great places like the Gotokuji shrine (with the many good luck cats). And the carrot tower at the end really rounds up this tour. It has a great view and you can see the places you have visit before. Ai also is an really nice and professional guide!

This host really has put a lot of thought and passion into this tour. It starts small with local attractions, then builds up over time and suddenly you find yourself in front of a beautiful panorama view. It is continuously interesting from beginning to end, while staying casual and relaxing at the same time. The host is very likable, has perfect English and has all the knowledge required to make an already interesting tour special. This is exactly how Airbnb experiences should be!

A yes. You probably have no business traveling to Setagaya and strolling through it's quiet, picturesque neighborhood, but you definitely should not skip it if you are looking for authenticity. Ai is super kind, very knowledgeable and commands great understanding of English. She will expertly guide you along the meandering streets, show you great photo spots, explain the local culture and patiently answer each and every question you might have about what Tokyo is like for a true local. Recommended if you are tired of every guidebook telling you about the same crowded spots. Also, the coffee was seriously good, no lie there.
