What you'll do

Join us in experiencing the simple joys of everyday life on our small farm.

While many people are fascinated by the culture of the Amish and Mennonites, very few get to experience our life from an inside perspective.

Savor the simple moments + learn new skills as you join in everyday life on our farm. We'll be making pies, doing farm chores and cooking food from garden-fresh ingredients. Throughout the weekend as we tend, build, harvest + cook you'll learn not only the skills and craftsmanship that have been passed down for generations, but the rich heritage that inspires our simple way of life.

Although you may not realize it, the Amish and Mennonites are just two of many groups that share a common history + beliefs. Beginning 500 years ago and broadly termed "Anabaptists," our churches and communities are scattered across the globe, with over 4 million members worldwide.

As we go through this adventure together you’ll be able to learn about the wide variety of traditions within our communities, from the most traditional to more modern groups.. each seeking to uphold the same deeply-valued principles in the way that works for them.

As we visit together, our desire is that this experience will leave you refreshed and with a desire to find what these values can mean to you in your own life and community.

Hey, I'm Will.

My wife Jewel and I live in N. Indiana and are the parents of three vibrant kiddos. It's a messy but wonderful life, as together we're fixing up our 100-year-old homestead.

Jewel and I are part of a small BRETHREN community, which means we drive cars and have electricity, while still deeply valuing the ideals + principles that we share with our other Anabaptist groups.

We find inspiration in our traditions of simplicity, community + faith, grappling with how to find the heart of these principles + live them out in a modern world.

We look forward to opening our home and our lives, and know that as we share and learn together we'll both end up the richer for it.

We loved our stay at the Johnson's farm. They were easy to be with and made us feel comfortable. The food was wonderful and made even better because we helped harvest what we ate. There was time to explore nearby towns with a helpful list of restaurants and places of interest. Dinner at the barn was lovely. We enjoyed games around the fire while getting to know the family. The children were intelligent, friendly and eager to share their home and knowledge of farm life with us. We didn't know what to expect when we booked this adventure but couldn't be more pleased with our stay.

Will, Jewel, and family shared their “simple life “with us and now we have new friends. We prepared by leaving the national news behind and allowing the “simple life “to work its magic. This charming young couple simply allowed us into their world. They demonstrated honesty, intelligence, and a willingness to candidly express priorities of life from their points of view. Just as importantly, we shared ours and they wanted to hear. Our adventure took us on short walks, harvesting /preparing food, And helping with simple farm chores. We learned the ways of their faith and compared our own. We were directed to neighboring towns where we could further immerse ourselves. Unexpected surprises and special touches were a bonus. We highly recommend the Simple Life.

Was it all a dream?? What a magical weekend!! We booked quickly and barely read the description so we weren't quite sure what to expect. From the moment we walked into their beautifully designed home to the moment we drove away with new friends, it was an ethereal experience. We are about the same age as Will and Jewel and I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it but we clicked and felt so at ease in their home. They were incredibly welcoming and open. Small things like "feel free to call in the middle of the night if you can't figure x out." Thoughtful things that helped us feel really welcome. They had a schedule set up for us to follow, but we were also free to do what we felt comfortable doing. Any recommendation they made was 100% worth following. The menu was planned out and the food was AMAZING. They had said they altered their menu for a vegan guest before us which I thought was kind. I was worried about what it would be like on a "vacation" with someone else's kids, but we thought they were awesome! They took hosting seriously and were not overly excited. Even on days when it rained and they had to be inside. Their anecdotes were cute and I really had a great time with them! I would not have guessed that going into the weekend. We attended church with them (optional) and the other members were so kind and excited to have visitors. I am so glad to know more about the Anabaptist faith, but more importantly I am glad to have new friends in Will and Jewel.

Our time with Will and Jewel and the children was so special to us. We learned so much about their faith and culture and felt genuinely welcome in their home. Their home is beautifully appointed and the landscape of their rural farming community is so peaceful. We especially loved biking together on country roads, harvesting vegetables from the garden, visiting the chickens, sharing stories and friendship around the table, and a magical dinner in the barn and night around the fire. We wholeheartedly recommend this experience; you'll be better for going and having met them. We hope to visit again.

This experience exceeded our expectations x 100! On arrival, the two little girls greeted us outside with flowers, and we were warmly welcomed into their family for the weekend. We were invited to participate in any of their daily activities that we were interested in, but not pushed into doing anything. They tailored our weekend experience to align with our interests, but made sure we weren't so busy that we couldn't relax some and enjoy. On Friday, we ate a delicious salad (homegrown) for lunch, picked vegetables from their huge garden for dinner (& a SCRUMPTIOUS breakfast casserole for Sat. AM), helped clean the chicken coop and gather eggs, and made strawberry & peach jam. On Saturday afternoon, we made apple pies in a wood burning stove for dinner's dessert. In the afternoon we visited the Menno-Hof, an Amish information & visitors' center in Shipshewana. We learned about the different ethnoreligious groups that are branches of the "Anabaptist" umbrella such as Amish, Mennonites & Hutterites. Then for dinner with the family on Saturday night... a big surprise! (I don't want to spoil it for you.) Afterwards we enjoyed games with the kids around the bonfire until late. It was a magical evening! On Sunday, we attended church and were fortunate enough to witness two baptisms (in a pond!) and enjoyed a fabulous potluck lunch. Back at the homestead, Will showed us how to make leather-bound journals which we were given to keep as souvenirs. This experience was amazing, wonderful, refreshing, and enlightening! Will & Jewel were open to answering ANY questions I asked about their faith, family and ways. The three children were well-mannered, "homeschooled" smart, and affectionate. They drew pictures and made up poems for us. They enjoyed interacting with us like we were their guests too. I learned so much about this very misunderstood group. They are NOT backwards people who refuse to keep up with the times; but people who cherish their faith and family values as top priorities, then focus on those while minimizing/eliminating the world's unnecessary distractions. Do yourself a huge favor; schedule this experience. You WILL NOT regret it!
