Local Food, History and Hidden Places

Istanbul, Turkey

Experience hosted by Ozcan

  2. Hosted in English

What you'll do

The day will start in front of epic Spice Bazaar and first experience will be a unique Turkish pide cooked in old oven located in a historical building which was built in 1888.

We will have our scrumptious Turkish delights from a 245 year old shop and try the local flavors in Spice Bazaar afterwards.

Before having a truly local meal; beans and rice followed by a unique pumpkin dessert with walnut and tahini, get ready for a fabulous view at magical Suleymaniye mosque.

Exploring the incomparable Grand Bazaar as real locals do, we will discover the best type of kebabs that are cooked at the moment just for us in the little hidden restaurants inside the bazaar.

Turkish coffee is always best after a perfect meal. So next will be the local coffee tasting while watching the people walking in the bustling streets of Grand Bazaar.

After leaving Grand Bazaar, we will have our doner kebabs in a 50 year old food stall. That may be the best one in town !

Before heading to the cosy streets along the marvellous Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, it's time to finalize the day by indulging ourselves with the famous Turkish dessert; Baklava!

Other things to note

This food trail has mostly meat products so it is not convenient for vegetarians or vegans. If you have this kind of diet, please let us know in advance. Please also note that the tour covers most parts of the old town.

It's hard to praise this tour and Ozcan enough. The food is amazing, and comes in amazing quantities too. The locations are off the beaten track - this lets you experience true Turkish food off you'd never find yourself. We ended up going back to the places Ozcan took us to multiple times. And Ozcan himself is a legend. He's phenomenonally knowledgeable and generous with his time and insight. Really impressed. 11/10.

Ozcan's tour has been the highlight of our trip! Despite reading the great reviews prior to booking this experience, it over-delivered on all fronts! If you're a foodie and curious, this is the experience to book! Ozcan not only brought us along on a well-planned and interesting tour, but also answered the many questions we had about Turkish culture, food, politics, religion, and football. I'll without a doubt do one of their other tours next time I visit Istanbul.

This is an incredible way to learn about Istanbul from a local. You will eat and learn about the food, of course, but this was so much more than that - Ozcan is so knowledgeable about the city’s history and had so many great stories. The places he took us were places we would have never found on our own. Highly recommend!

The food is of course excellent, and you get a (huge) sampling of lots of different savory and desserts. However, this is not just a food tour, but basically a guided tour of the grand bazaar + spice market + surrounding streets + visiting the most beautiful mosque + history lesson. Had a really wonderful time and can't recommend the tour enough! Ozcan is a world traveler with interesting stories, really enjoyed chatting with him as well. Ozcan also gave some invaluable tips/advice for rest of my stays in Turkey.

I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting Istanbul for the first time. It was so educational, fun, and of course delicious food. We went to places off the beaten path that were hidden gems.

Great day exploring Istanbul and trying Turkish food with Didem! All the food was fantastic and it was even modified for a vegetarian like me (you will not go hungry if you don’t do meat in Turkey!).
