Where you'll be

2 hour train ride from Tokyo. We'll meet at Gumma-Yawata Station, 7-min from Takasaki Station (Shinkansen or local train) . Takasaki is well-known for the lucky Daruma Dolls, but is not easily accessible for non-Japanese guests. We will go to this 200-year old atelier to paint your own doll, creating the eyebrows (cranes) and mustache (tortoise), symbols of longevity, on these good luck charms to take it home as a lightweight souvenir.

Great experience from the busy city. It was so close to Tokyo that I was able to combine the experience with evening plans. The day was eventful and well paced, yet relaxing. Renee kept us right on schedule with a seamless flow. Loved meeting such a high ranked master of Daruma-making and his protege daughter. It was great to learn about the history of the Daruma. The food was super. Renee is very knowledgeable and was fun to be with. I highly recommend this experience!

What a Day! This was just an amazing experience, you definitely won’t find anything like it! The feeling of actually being able to paint your own face to the Daruma doll is like dipping your toes into the ink of Japanese culture, and painting a beautiful memory. Something better then sushi making or dressing up! It was so lovely to watch the Master at work, he was so free flowing and Renee was so amazing at translating every question and statement made. I felt so comfortable with her because her knowledge in everything was so vast I could ask anything and nothing was to silly of a question. ALSO CAN I MENTION ABOUT THE FOOD! :D What an delicious LUNCH! You got to eat at the local spot, which I think is always better because you get to see the real “mamas” cooking style! And also get some ice cream right before heading back on the train. I’m still at Awe for this day, and I wish I could have wrote a better review but you just have to go and find out for yourself! Also I wish I would have spent a night in her lovely castle she Airbnb’s. TILL NEXT TIME! See you soon!

This was my first "experience" with Airbnb and it really set the bar high! Renee takes you along on a wonderful half-day trip that really highlights the countryside beauty and culture of the Gunma Prefecture. It was a great end-to-end experience, with a visit to a local shrine in the hillside, learning about the ancient craft of Daruma from a master craftsman (and getting to take one home as a souvenir) as well as tasting the delicious local food and farm fresh gelato! Renee is a great guide and host, having lived in the region, and her translation skills were so helpful since I don't speak Japanese. Thank you Renee for a wonderful experience and memory I will keep with me!
