Learn to paint Your own Alebrije

Oaxaca, Mexico

Experience hosted by Armando

4 hours
Includes drinks, transportation, equipment
Up to 4 people
Hosted in English, Spanish

What you'll do

My friend Cesar will pick you at your hotel or wherever else is convenient for you. From there it will take around 30 minutes to the Aleberije village Arrazola in their private car.

In Arrazola, you will meet me, my wife Antonia and our son Alejandro at our workshop to show you the entire creation process of our amazing art: from carving the wood; making natural colors out of local fruits, insects and minerals to painting the figures in the traditional design with acrylic paint.

Cesar will translate into English if needed.

Now the fun part starts. Time to get creative. You will choose a small plain wooden animal figure to paint yourself which could take up to two hours. Brushes and colors will be provided. This will be a lovely souvenir to take home and remember this experience!

Besides all this, you can check our gallery for more stunning art!

After we finished in Arrazola, Cesar will take you back to the starting point.

Hi, my name is Armando. I live in Arrazola, the village where alebrijes were born, around 14 km away from Oaxaca City. It was my grandfather Manuel Jiménez, who became famous for his wooden alebrijes in 1950.
Making alebrijes is my passion. I've been carving and painting the figures for more than 30 years. My entire family is into this beautiful art, like most families here in Arrazola.
Together with my friend Cesar which I met through my work, we want to teach more people about our way to express emotions through the Alebrijes work and welcome you in my village.

Where you'll be

The workshop takes place in the front yard of my house. There is a cute area with tables and chairs under a roof to get creative. The gallery and two dogs are also part of the house.

Wow, this was such a special experience! I am so glad that I signed up for this experience, it is really a gem. First, Cesar organized everything for us perfectly. He came and picked us up straight from our hotel and even made sure we got our much needed morning coffee! The communication with him was a breeze. Then, we get to the small village in Armando’s traditional shop. Armando has been doing this for 4 generations! He told us the story of how his grandfather came up with the idea of the wooden figures, and how they’ve developed throughout the years, especially in terms of the type of paint used. Next, we got to pick our figures and paint! This was so relaxing and meditative, and Armando gave some advice on colors or techniques when needed. We got to all sit in the beautiful outdoor workshop eating peanuts with lime and fresh oranges, all painting under the breeze! I felt so welcomed and at home. My wooden figure was so cute and I love it! I can’t wait to display it in my bedroom at home!

What a wonderful day! I learned a lot about the origin of alebrijes. Location was out of the city and was a great drive. The people are as fantastic and gave me a great experience to my Oaxacan adventure. This is a must!

This was a very fun and relaxing experience. My knowledge of Alebrijes did not extend beyond the movie Coco, and with this experience you get to learn the real history and masters behind the alebrije scene. On top of that, you get to be inspired and make your own. This experience was very unique, and very engaging. You'll love it.

Really loved this experience. From the moment you arrive it feels like you’re part of the family. Lots of laughter, storytelling, and great company. So nice to support a local family directly and sidestep the corrupt tour companies that don’t benefit the local community nearly as much.
