What you'll do

This is a deep dive into Harlem culture and living history with someone steeped in knowledge and experience of the local scene. Meet your friendly guide Amanda or Gordon at the world famous Apollo Theater, conveniently close to the subways.

As we walk around Harlem’s beautiful tree-lined streets of brownstone homes, you’ll stop to greet neighbors and linger to take in the spontaneous moments that epitomize Harlem today: It may be a sudden parade of motorcycle machismo down Lenox Avenue; an hypnotic African drumming circle on Adam Clayton Powell Plaza; a sidewalk poetry recital or passionate political speech; or it may be a street art exhibit that will capture your attention for a while. This tour is designed to live in the spontaneous moments that make any meaningful Experience memorable and special.

Walking to the beat of the streets, our route starts at The Apollo Theater to learn about how Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, and Michael Jackson all became legends there. The 1920’s Prohibition Era comes alive walking in footsteps of Billie Holiday down the original Swing Street and Blvd. of Dreams to see the legendary "Tree of Hope. " You’ll visit 60 foot murals of bebopper Dizzy Gillespie while strolling along the Walk of Fame, and get a great photo with Deo's amazing Harlem World mural.

We end conveniently by Sylvia's Soul Food or chef Marcus Samuelson’s Red Rooster.

Hi, I'm Gordon, a 3rd generation New Yorker. My co-host, Amanda, and I are in love with Harlem. Personally, I’ve owned and operated a unique Harlem jazz club, EZ's Woodshed, and have been designing and leading immersive tours through NY's underground jazz scene since 1997. I'm a domestic / international tour guide and world traveler with extended stays in Nigeria, Ecuador, Asia and Israel. As a political activist, I walked across America in 1986 for nuclear disarmament on the Great Peace March.

Amanda is a 20-year Harlem resident, Columbia University graduate, and Jazz Diva Supreme who shows you Harlem's hidden secrets and iconic landmarks. Amanda knows everyone and no one could ever forget Amanda.

Our nightly Big Apple Jazz tours are ranked #1 in NYC on TripAdvisor.

Where you'll be

We'll meet at world famous Apollo Theater to begin our exploration of Harlem.

It’s also the other historic markers and current street art and street life - the intrinsic treasures - we value the most and can't wait to share on this Experience.

We'll see and discuss The Jazz Walk of Fame, 60 foot murals of Dizzy Gillespie, Deo's Planet Harlem, and Billie Holiday's 1933 plaque. And of course, The Apollo Theater.

Highly recommend - Gordon is a great guide! He knows Harlem’s Jazz and cultural scene through a very unique lens, and was quite accommodating. I see the history and streets in a new light!

My kids and I thoroughly enjoyed walking and touring Harlem with Gordon. He is passionate about jazz and the community, and is an expert on all things Harlem. We spent the next day talking about Harlem and all the things we learned with Gordon. We will do this tour again or his night tour next time we are visiting NYC. Highly recommend it.
