What you'll do

We meet at the shop in the morning when no one is there yet. At the beginning I invite you to have a morning drink (coffee, tea, other refreshment). I show you the place, tell the history behind it how the shop was created and what we went through to get here. Afterwords I introduce you to the daily routine that has to be done before opening the shop. Each will receive an assignment to do - sorting books, vacuuming floor, bringing dishes, warming up coffee machine etc. Together in an 30 min time we will get the shop up and running before the first costumer. When everything will be done - we have a question answers about tips and hints and inside info of how it is running a second hand English bookshop in Riga. As the shop starts its day by welcoming customers - we will continue the day by having a relaxed walking tour (as I'm a professional guide for more then 10 years) going through the Art Nouveau district, park lane and other areas that are closely situated to the shop and city centre. The tour will last about an hour till hour and a half. During the tour you will see the best examples of Rigas' famous architecture and hear the stories that represent Riga and the complex history of it. By the end of our time that will be 1,5 h in the shop and 1,5h in the tour - you will be the most knowledgeable person about independent bookshop management and Riga inside stories.

Edgars

I'm owner of the only English language bookshop in Riga, Latvia. After working for Robert (the founder of the shop) for a year - one day he said - Edgar would you like to have this place for you. And so my journey began. Now Im running this cultural gem for the 6 year and enjoy it every day. People bringing in their books for exchange, local artists, politicians, historians etc. coming in every for their usual dose of coffee, musicians coming for practice on our piano and many more interesting things happening every day. I would love to share with you this experience if you wish to!

Where you'll be

We meet at the courtyard of the shop. Two hours there, then we go for a walk through art Nouveau centre, visit a hidden stair case with beautiful murals and decorations, meet local future artists at the Art Academy of Latvia (this is possible if there is no event in the academy when guests aren't allowed). Then our route will go through park lane and end up in Old town. A lid back day with a lot of information.
